Nice way to start the day.Cute rhyming, great "helping" observations, and happy vibe.
Wish there were a few extra pages (bit longer).
Nice small size for little hands. We purchased one of ourselves and one as a gift.Love this character since he's so positive.

Book two in the Sisters of the Quilt series, When Morning Comes is the perfect sequel to When the Heart Cries. As Hannah comes of age in this journey of faith, she's exposed to a new world of opportunity. A world where many of her dreams can come true. Woodsmall is a gifted writer who once again turned off my inner editor, enabling me to suspend disbelief and experience Hannah's life-changing challenges.
Have you ever read a sequel to a book you loved, and the author took the story in a direction you didn't want it to go? I was surprised with the end of When Morning Comes, yet it had a certain rightness to it, a satisfying end. But it isn't the end. There's more to Hannah's story to come. I for one, can't wait to read it.

I usually enjoy SB, even her older books, but this one was over the top.The main characters were not very likeable. The story was ridiculous.Brin leaves her husband Riley. She doesn't tell him why, and he loves her so much that he lets months go by before asking why.I just can't buy it, and couldn't invest myself in it.

This wonderful book talks about winning the battle over seizures but to me it went far beyond that to illustrate the imperative we have as Mothers to advocate for our children. To listen to our inner voices and alarms because they matter. This story is not just for people with children who are suffering with seizure disorders but for any parent who is not being heard or who is considering disregarding what their gut is telling them.

At two-and-a-half, Christina was autistic. She didn t speak and had the cognitive ability of an infant. With one-hundred seizures a day, her life was being ripped away by a relentless villain epilepsy. When doctors gave up, we hung on to hope and became her advocates, researching, praying and believing for a miracle. A special diet, with roots in scripture, became the first miracle. Christina proved nothing is impossible when she repeated words to a song, Good Morning Beautiful. Extremely delayed, it was a huge milestone. Her story caught the attention of the national recording artist who recorded the song and prior to brain surgery, people around the world began praying for her. Now seizure and autism free, therapists cite services are no longer needed as Christina s file doesn t match the patient. She made honor roll and still sings Good Morning, Beautiful.

"Morning Girl," by Michael Dorris, is a short novel that is told in the first person by two of its characters, Morning Girl and her brother Star Boy. The chapters alternate between these characters' two voices. The children live with their parents in an island village; their community has a pre-industrial culture.
Morning Girl and her brother have the type of conflict you might expect between a sister and her sometimes annoying younger brother. This relationship is explored against the backdrop of the children's culture and the island setting. I particularly liked the character of Star Boy: he's experiencing some emotional growing pains as he yearns for respect while still engaging in some childish actions. An important theme in the book is the naming tradition of the children's culture.
Dorris writes in a clear, poetic prose style that is touched by a mystical element. And don't miss the startling epilogue which pulls the whole story into focus.

A Case of Crooked Letters (A Morning Shade Mystery series #2) (Paperback) Review
The Morning Shade Mysteries are a chick-lit version of the Mitford series. While billed as mysteries, they're really slice-of-life books with a light, no-harm-done mystery woven through it all.Maude, who's first person narrative marks every other chapter, is a wonderful, realistic woman stuggling with money, her mother in law, and faith.Despite being in a completely different period of life, I really identified with Maude like I haven't with the too-sweet heroines of Christian romance. If you prefer plot-driven books then pass this by, it's not what you're looking for. However if you're in the mood for a light character-driven book that will cause you to laugh, sympathize, and cause you to think about your own daily existance, then pick up this book. You'll like it!

Quickies: Morning, Noon and Night [Paperback] Review
Okay, I just wrote a review for this book, and it is not showing up here. Hence this is my second attempt.
I bought this book for my mother who admittedly needs all the help in the kitchen that she can get. First, Amazon had the book delivered quickly (within 2 days). Second, my mothers first word about the actual book itself was 'beautiful'. She also has actually been using the book, which makes me feel it is a good cookbook for those who need creative yet quick, healthful food at home. A great gift!

If you're from one of the lesser states, you might not care, but for Texans, or those who have to deal with Texans, this is a reference work without comparison.I always have a current copy on my desk.(I would have given earlier editions only four stars because of all that junk about entertainment stars, etc.)The history section has been improved and the county by county section, with maps and demographics, is what I use almost daily.

Streiker's Morning Sun (Paperback) Review
Robin Hardy outdid herself with this novel -- Hats off to her! The whole series is really an allegory about how a Christian relates to God, and how God feels/behaves toward his children, but this, the last book in the series, is a masterpiece. Don't go into it expecting a normal, believable plot, though. It doesn't have one. The ENTIRE book is an explanation of thoughts, a true gem in Hardy's crown. This book is one that never fails to make me think -- and the more times you read it, the more you see. The Streiker series is on my 'keeper' shelf, and has been for years -- they are wonderful novels, even though they must be read with an eye to the "inner" story that Hardy is trying to write.

This is a particularly useful book if you know basie, Basieism and what is happening already. Count Basie never was the kind of person you would expect to write a tell all, or note how much reefer was being smoked like Buck Clayton did in his memoir, or spill the inside dope on John Hammond as a number of Basieites have in their books and interviews.
Basie has always been a cool professional, concerned with handling the business side, keeping everybody happy, and keeping the ship above the water. He goes by the old watchword from the 50s we used to have "Maintain your cool at all times."
Thus we get a memoir that has a lot of places and names in it, a lot about working in the band, but very little that is going to surprise or wow anyone who isn't into the Basie story. He stays pretty close to the vest, and presents a very easy going story.
One example ofhow this book smoothes over conflict and controversy and makes everything seem smoother than the truth is how it treats the departure of Claude Fiddler Williams from the Basie Band in 1937. While the ignorant think Freddie Green was Basie's only guitarist, Williams was the band's first guitarist--and he was Downbeat guitarist of the year that year--and also played hot jazz fiddle solos with the band. Only the Live at the Chatterbox recording lets you hear his brilliant fiddling.
When the band arrived in New York, John Hammond who acted like manager, director, and overlord over the band for years, decided the Fiddler's violin was too "country" and replaced him with Freddie Green who was playing in a New York Club when Basie arrived in the Apple.
Williams who lived until last year (2004) always said John Hammond fired him, although he says he felt grateful in the end because his career as an independent fiddle soloist would have never taken off had he stayed with Basie. In this book, Basie says that he and Williams came to a friendly parting of the ways that let Williams become independent. There is lots of smoothed over stuff like this.
To be fair, this was more or less of an interview with an aging Basie with little attempt to research things. Many things get hazy or are remember conveniently as the years pass on, as I am coming to realize myself as I enter my late 50s.
The book also suffers from Albert Murray's interviewing. Murray never presents his credentials in his appearances as an "expert" on Jazz.In fact he is a retired Air Force General and has never been a musician, a musicologist, or anything professionally associated with music. He's imposed his own rather conservative viewpoint on Jazz as the all American capitalist product, rather than an expression of Black culture, oppression, and a struggle to Africanize music. Rather, Murray priviledges a progression to take Jazz closer to the forms of European classical music. So, it is no surprise that Murray isn't going to try to ferret out controversy, difficult truthes, or unconventional behavior, particularly with a man as cool and under control as Bill Basie.
Nevertheless, there is a lot of information here that exists nowhere else. Sadly, no one has written a serious biography of Basie, or a serious study of his music save for the section on him in Gunter Schuller's great book on Swing. Until that takes place, this is the book.
Like most books of this kind, the part about Basie's life before he became famous, growing up, learning his chops on piano in New York, travelling with TOBA shows, hooking up with Rushing, then with the Blue Devils, then with Moten, are the most interesting and readable parts of this book.Similarly, the book speeds up and summarizes too quickly the closer it gets to the time the interviews took place.
One thing is nice is the list of who took what solo on some of the Old Testament sides.
Still, Basie is important enough for every true Jazz lover, or at least every true swing lover, to own this book, particularly as a cheap used edition can be obtained for little!

An interesting conversation took place the other day. I mentioned to my grandfather, now in his early 80s, that I had just bought the new book entitled "All those Mornings...at the Post." And he responded with, "I grew up reading Shirley Povich."
My response: "So did I, and I am 25." And so did my father. That's the amazing thing about Povich - he linked generations. He wrote about stars from Walter Johnson to Michael Jordan and everyone in between.
As a freelance sports writer, and former sports editor of my college newspaper, the Towerlight in Towson, Md., Povich was my biggest inspiration growing up and I would be willing to bet that most other sportswriters or aspiring sportswriters feel the same way.
I tried to put in perspective to my wife how influential he was. I said he is the Humphrey Bogart of sports writing. He is the epitome of what newspapermen should be and he was just as good in 1994 as he was in 1924.
The amazing thing is he never retired and wrote his final column the day before he died in 1998. This book brings his most important columns to life and for people of my generation we get to live events such as the Senators' only World Series title in 1924 for the first time.
This book is a treasure and is highly recommended to anyone who has ever read a sports column. Chances are the person who wrote the column did so because Shirley L. Povich inspired him.

Over the past ... years (I'm 58), I've used various weight loss methods.I'd lose it, then find it...lose it, then find it.This book has the right combination: strengthening exercises (just 2 a day), food suggestions (no calorie counting; very little weighing), recruiting helpers, journalling, inspirational readings. After a couple of weeks, you're in the habit and liking it.
Sounds like a lot of time and energy. It is, in the beginning.Just like anything new.I'm in my fifth week.My energy level escalating within 2-3 days.My body showed obvious signs of firming up within a week.I've lost 9 pounds and like having minigoals.
Jorge Cruise doesn't push young, skinny bodies. He promotes health and well-being.If young, skinny bodes are the result, so be it.I feel great and am already getting comments about changes in my body.My favorite result is the increase in energy. Before Cruise, a walk was preceded by long debates with myself about whether or not I should do it.Now I find myself in the middle of a walk and wonder how I got there without all that self-debate.
I'll keep working with this book and when I've lost about 20 more pounds, I'm planning to switch to his other book--the one for losing 30# or less.
8 Minutes in the Morning for Real Shapes, Real Sizes: Specifically Designed for People Who Want to Lose 30 Pounds or More by Jorge Cruise is well worth the money. My health and fitness are worth much more than the cost of the book and the time it takes to do this great program.

This book truly exemplifies the true meaning of christmas, to love one another. When Rob, the 15 year old boy of a modest farm family, overhears his parents talking, he comes to realize the love his father has for him and the love he also holds for his father. Not having the money to purchase a gift that he feels expresses this love, he chooses to surprise his father by doing the morning milking and chores before the usual 4AM.He sneaks out to the barn and his heart bursts with love as he waits for his father to discover the surprise. The illustrations are beautiful, dark and dusky like the time of day before surnrise, and the clouds in the sky take the shape of the Holy Family on the first Christmas.A valuable lesson for all.The gift of love is the most precious gift of all.

Good Morning, Good Night Bilingual (Spanish Edition) [Hardcover] Review
I'll echo the previous reviewer's comments - this book has been our son's favorite bedtime book, and the central part of the bedtime routine, for most of his bedtimes now (he just turned 1).After we read a few other books, this one comes out, and he knows it's getting close to lights out time.He loves to pet the furry animals, to anticipate which animal comes next, and to point out all of the birds and butterflies.A wonderful way to end the day.

HIS MISTRESS BY MORNING has an intriguing plot...
26 year old spinster charlotte wilmont has been in love with sebastian marlowe, viscount trent, for as long as she can remember. she has just received an inherited ring from her aunt, a ring that has the power to grant one wish of the person wearing it. charlotte doesn't know this at the time, but after seeing sebastian one day her secret longings are voiced aloud. she wishes sebastian was in love with her.
she awakens the next morning to find herself in the arms of sebastian after a night of passion and she's of course very confused because whereas the day before she was an on the shelf spinster, she is now the most celebrated cyprian in london and sebastian is her lover...and very much in love with her. however, sebastian isn't a rich lover and therefore must marry an heiress in order for him to save his family from financial ruin.
i purchased this book because i was curious to see how the author would pull this storyline out and unfortunately, i was disappointed with the results. while i found charlotte to be a tolerable heroine, her preoccupation with all things sebastian left her characterization threadbare. it seemed everything she did was for the sole purpose of obtaining sebastian's adoration, and this despite the fact that the reader learns nothing of why she loves him in the first place. i mean, we're told he's honorable and dependable and boring despite being handsome, which made me wonder what charlotte saw in him other than his looks.
in the 'wish world' where she's the cyprian, sebastian is totally different. here he's a rake, charming and engaging and enjoying life, but he's behaving in the opposite manner as he was in the 'world before the wish is made', so basically she's enamored with a totally different side of this guy.not to mention the fact that charlotte's alternate persona 'lottie' comes across as a mercenary and materlistic person, which made it impossible for me to believe sebastian was in love with her for any other reason than the fact that she was beautiful and great in bed. i will say the author did a decent job with the love scenes, although because the characters are supposed to be already intimate at the time the 'wish world' begins, there was a lack of build up, kind of like sex without foreplay.
the time the author spends in the 'wish world' is too long, so that by the time charlotte goes from cyprian back to spinster there are roughly one hundred pages left for her to get sebastian to fall in love with her. she uses information she gained as the cyprian in the 'wish world' to woo him, which seemed to me like cheating instead of her actually having an inate knowledge of her supposed beloved. i mean, if i had the cheat sheet to what pleased the man i loved, of course he'd fall in love with me, right? it made it seem as though their love was manipulated moreso than fated and took all of the romance of discovery out of the mix.
the ending was extremely rushed. it was like one minute sebastian is wondering who this new charlotte is (because of course she adopts some of her 'lottie' personality in her attempts to woo him) and the next minute he's in love with her. it really seemed to happen just that fast. again, very little build up.
so while i appreciate the author's original concept, i can't recommend this book. the characterization of both hero and heroine was sketchy, the heroine's singular purpose of getting the hero to fall in love with her left her uninteresting to me, and while the love scenes were done well, the lack of build up of the whole love story made me feel like they were strangers highly attracted to each other sexually, but with no other common interests to a warrant a long-lasting love.

Oh, how I wish . . .
When a promised inheritance turns out to be a fraud, shy spinster Charlotte Wilmont makes an impetuous wish that despite her lack of charm and fortune, she could capture the heart of the one man whom she's forever adored—Sebastian, Viscount Trent.
Be careful what you wish for . . .
With that utterance, Charlotte awakens shocked to find herself entwined with her beloved Sebastian. But the respectable man she knew is now a most rakish devil and she is . . . well, by some inexplicable magic, London's most infamous mistress.
Even passion comes at a price . . .
Being the scandalous Lottie Townsend affords Charlotte unimaginable freedom—passionate nights with Sebastian, endless days of shopping, and adoring fans. But all too soon, Charlotte finds that being one man's mistress isn't the same as being his wife. Yet if she returns to her old, respectable life, can Charlotte trust there will be enough magic left to recapture Sebastian's heart . . . and reawaken his rakish desires?

Christmas Every Morning is one of the best books I've read all year and in my opinion the best book Lisa Bergren has ever written! The troubled relationship between Krista Mueller and her mother Charlotte is as authentic as it is complex. There is intensity and depth to the ravages of Alzheimer's that makes you want to call your mother to tell her you love her. Lisa Bergren avoids the trap of stereotypical pat solutions, offering a story that will keep you reading late into the night, get out the Kleenex for Christmas Every Morning!

Morning Star of the Reformation (Paperback) Review
I recommend this book for students ages 10-13 who are studying Martin Luther and the Reformation.(I actually read it with my 9 year old, who is pretty bright. But I don't think it will hold the attention of most 9 year olds.) The book gives you a real good feel for how it was for the clergy in this time period and the tension that existed, and continued to be a problem, in a revolutionary time period for Christianity.I did not really understand the historical difference between Protestantism and Catholicism until I read this book, which is historical fiction. It is a great supplement to your textbook reading, which doesn't really give you a feel for how things were for individuals entering the clergy and sympathetic to the reformers' cause.I give it 3 stars because it took a little while to get into the story, but it is worth it, and it isn't too long to get through it.It will also explain the important role John Wycliffe played in this time period.

What a wonderful way to tell a story! We're given two main characters to follow through the years of 1933 to 1975.Each narrates his/her own story, switching back and forth from chapter to chapter.Morgan and Georgia emerged from completely different backgrounds, yet shared a single passion. The passion of flight, so exquisitely expressed by Marie, that the reader is transported to the sky.At once a heartfelt and visual experience, it is impossible to not become fully invested in the lives of these two individuals as they fledge toward a relationship.
Although the book takes place during World War II and carries with it much historical content, it is so much more than just historical fiction.Marie has developed a variety of secondary characters, with colorful personalities. In doing so, she has livened up the mix, and given us the opportunity to feel a multitude of emotions toward everyone in the story. There are those that are sadly comical, the ones you love to hate, and those that have struggled through hardship and can only be an inspiration. This book had me both crying and laughing outright.
Wings of the Morning can be read simply, as an easy-flowing love story, or as an example of patriotism and the recognition of the women of the WASPs, or if you are so inclined, delve deeply, and delight in the spiritual side of the story, consider such intriguing topics as Nature vs Nurture. But most of all, enjoy what Marie so capably brings to the mind's eye.

Morgan leaves college to enlist as a Navy pilot, and his whole world suddenly changes when America goes to war. Watching his friends fall in battle, robs Morgan of the joy he always felt in the air. It will take one very unusual woman to help him get it back...
Georgia Jean Carter learned early never to rely on a man for anything but trouble. Airplanes are different: they take a girl places most boyfriends can't. Remarkably, the war makes it possible for Georgia to do her part as a pilot. I bought this for my 5 year old grandson who is about to become a big brother and who loves to wake his parents on Sunday Mornings. He absolutely loved this book despite the fact that it was written about 40 years ago and doesn't have transformers or robots in it. I have always loved Judith Viorst's writing and it is a joy to pass it along to the next generation.

But when Nick really yells help, the know they're in trouble. Then the boys and their parents discover something they never would have imagined.

This book was a gift to me in so many ways. As a Protestant, I was amazed at the relevance Bishop Sheen's words held for my life.As a student, this book has been useful as a reference for quotes for research papers, etc.(Useful for speeches, too.)Each page holds a concise, insightful, andpowerful Christian message to meditate on.When I do not have much time, Itake a moment before bed or before I start my day to read one page. Thebook is organized so well for people who are pressed for time, and it willprobably change your life for the better, as it has mine. If you want toknow how God wants us to view the world, and if you need a powerfulreminder of what your priorities really are, read this book!

The Morning the Sun Went Down [Paperback] Review
from "Kirkus Reviews" (starred review): A slim, modest, and altogether extraordinary memoir of rural Native American life. Wilson, a poet and scholar from the Achumawe and Atsugewi tribes of northeastern California, came into adolescence in the mid-1950s, when his people had all but disappeared through assimilation or extermination. Blame for part of that disappearance he lays squarely at the door of whites; but, he adds, "the neglect of our Elders to teach us our traditions was equally damaging." His own parents did their best to teach Wilson and his siblings something of the old ways: how to hunt deer, how to tame rattlesnakes, how to listen for mountain lions, lessons that he imparts to his readers with precision and grace- and not a little humor. But when his mother and younger brother were killed in a collision with a logging truck, Wilson was sent off to live with white foster parents among unfriendly neighbors (he remembers, touchingly, one young girl "who did not accuse me with her eyes or attitude," principally "because we were not enemies"). Whe it appeared that his foster parents wanted to strip away his Indian identity, Wilson rebelled, for which he was sent off to a boarding school where the young California Indian charges were locked in their rooms at nights and punished by day for minor infractions. Wilson recounts these horros matter-of-factly but doesn't dwell on them; instead, he celebrates a teacher who sagely corrected his compositions, encouraged him to improve himself, and urged him to become a writer.Readers have reason to be grateful to that teacher as well. Wilson is a careful and compassionate obeserver of his life and those of other young Indians, and his book is a fine addition to the growing library of Native American autobiography.

The story is touching and honest. The depiction of Provincetown is spot on without being trite. Having grown up on Cape Cod I often see stories set on the sandbar that play too much into the quintessential view of the iconic summer playground and as a result lose the essence of the experience of really being there. This was not the case in Mornings With Mailer. I was most impressed by the way Raymond crafted the story of a young man who lost his father in his early childhood befriending an elderly man in his final years. The raw truth on Raymonds part of woe that preceded the friendship, the drinking and "lost years" provided a backdrop to the fertile ground on which the friendship grew. Following Raymonds process of healing in which he and Mailer developed a companionship that at once filled the father void and gave focus to Raymond after an extended period of searching, provided an interesting view of what it is to be male in a culture that too often sees our boys growing up without a strong male role model in their life. Adding to this poignant tale the fact that the octogenarian is the iconic Pulitzer Prize winning Norman Mailer. The book allows those of us who knew the legend to sneak a peek into the reality that was Norman Mailer. A pleasurable read. I would highly recommend it!

I've been a fan of Melissa Good's work, especially the Dar and Kerry series, for a long time now.I own all the prior books in the series and I absolutely LOVE them!I reread them frequently and even though I know what's coming, Ms. Good's undeniable gift from the Muses manages to pull me in so that I feel like I am reading the stories for the first time.
With that said, I must admit that I am very disappointed in this next installment in the DaK series. The combination of military jargon and complex computer scenarios make this novel kind of boring for an average civilian who is no computer geek like Dar Roberts. Aside from that, I was most disappointed in the characters this time around.I mean, just how many different ways can you make Dar Roberts out to be this super-human person who is too good to interact with the people around her?I feel like this novel captured them all.Yuck!I couldn't even finish the book!Who wants to read hundreds of pages about a person like that?
I would suggest skimming the online version of this story for the Dar and Kerry parts. Those are always so beautiful.Otherwise, this book is not a necessary investment.

A connection others don't understand...A love that won't be denied...Danger they can sense but cannot see...Dar Roberts was always ruthless and single-minded...until she met Kerry Stuart.Kerry was oppressed by her family's wealth and politics. But Dar saved her from that. Now new dangers confront them from all sides. While traveling to Chicago, Kerry's plane is struck by lightning. Dar, in New York for a stockholders' meeting, senses Kerry is in trouble. They simultaneously experience feelings that are new, sensations that both are reluctant to admit when they are finally back together. Back in Miami, a cover-up of the worst kind, problems with the military, and unexpected betrayals will cause more danger. Can Kerry help as Dar has to examine her life and loyalties and call into question all she's believed in since childhood? Will their relationship deepen through it all? Or will it be destroyed?

A Holy Island Prayer Book: Morning, Midday, and Evening Prayer (Paperback) Review
This is a wonderful book from the Christian community of Lindisfarne Island, off the coast of England. If you follow the book's structure, you will be taken through 5 weeks of prayers, 3 times per day. Each day has a theme, such as "New Life" or "The Cross," plus morning, midday and evening prayers for each of the 5 weeks, that also include 5 scripture readings per day. That is a total of 35 days of unique prayers, or 105 prayer sets in total that include 175 Bible readings.
Keep your Bible handy, since scripture passages each day are listed but not quoted. This keeps the book small, and allows you to use your favorite translation.
The style of many of the written prayers is traditional Celtic liturgical. There are also frequent quotes from ancient church figures, books, and documents that fit beautifully with the themes. As a relatively conservative Christian, I have enjoyed Ray Simpson's inclusion of all people and all creation as belonging to God, as is typical of Celtic style prayers, in a form that does NOT include an overtly liberal social adgenda.
I am currently finishing up on my first time praying though this book (a total of 35 days), and recommend it without reservation.

A Morning Like This: A Novel [Paperback] Review
David and Abby Treasure (niiiiiice fake last name), along with their son Braden, are the perfect Christian family. Until, that is, David's affair from 9 years ago comes back to haunt them. Turns out his mistress gave birth to his child and never told him. Oops. And of course, now the illegitimate daughter is dying of cancer and needs a bone marrow transplant, and he has to tell his wife and bring all sorts of loverly turmoil into his family. Yada yada yada, we've all heard this story a zillion times before.
I was pretty irritated by this book. Abby gets angry at David, rightly so, and he acts like a creep toward her. He doesn't get that because he went out acting like a manwhore, he's to blame. But what grossed me out was when Abby tells him that the affair was partly HER fault, that she pushed him away, even though he cheated on her while she was not only pregnant, but just after giving birth to their son. Nice guy there. She forgives him (this is a Christian novel, and the author seems set on the fact that divorce is never an option, even if your significant other goes around acting like a workaholic prostitute), and of course, everyone lives happily ever after.
I don't agree. I think that she was making faith out to be the only remedy for a marriage that was in desperate need of a lot of therapy (faith never hurts, of course, but God helps those who help themselves). I felt almost as though the author looked down on anyone who would dare divorce over something so little as infidelity. This made me feel small. Didn't care for that.

The first thing that the reader notes is the book is impossible to put down.Mr. Rosen builds a special rapport with the reader that makes his story compelling. The reader is left each time the book is put down, with the irresistible urge to find out what will happen next.
Rosen tells a wonderful and realistic tale of a Reform Woman Rabbi in Manhattan. The book describes her relationship to the Jewish faith, from a Reform Perspective. This perspective is a difficult one, as the concept of Reform Judaism has at its core, the same beliefs as all Judaism, but tempered by a modern interpretation of the scriptures that lends itself more easily to the combination of civil and religious life in the vast Materialistic and Capitalistic and Cacophonous reality of modern society.
Yet Deborah, the lady Rabbi who is the protagonist of Rosen's story, does not in any way lack spiritualism or connection to her faith. She has a great and mighty dedication to her beliefs. And she does her utmost to convey that feeling to her congregants and to all that she may meet. Some would say, that she made some very rash decisions and took some very unorthodox actions within Rosen's story. But this is for the reader to evaluate in the privacy of the mind.
One thing is clearly true. The book shows the stark contrast and the interesting co-existence of human Joy and human Sadness, as they live within us, all the time, yet most of the time, they balance within us to make us a whole person. When that balance is no longer within our control, we lose our ability to moderate that and we also lose our ability to operate in regular day to day society.
Rosen is acutely wonderful at illustrating this dichotomy in his book. For all who have struggled with the concepts of the different forms of Judaism, this book offers a new perspective; a perspective that puts the power of decision and free choice back into the individual's mind and heart, and not into anyone else's.
The book is highly recommended for all with any interest whatsoever in theology and the concept of God.Regardless of one's religion, one can related to the stark, yet gentle realism of Rosen's work.

Young Jamie wakes early on St. Patrick's Day, much earlier than his sleeping family. He remembers that there will be a parade to the top of Acorn Hill today, and then he remembers that his brothers say he's too little to march in the parade.
Well, fine then! He'll just have a parade of his own!!Jamie sets off in his green sweater, hat and coat with Nell the dog and march up the center of town to Acorn Hill by themselves.Along the way, the meet some of the other villagers, one of whom gives Jamie an Irish flag that he proudly waves in his own parade.Does he make it to the top??You'll have to read to find out!!
"St. Patrick's Day in the Morning" is a beautiful story for any child who has ever been told that they're too small, too weak, too short, too this, too that, to do something. You can see Jamie's' happiness at proving everyone wrong. The pen and ink illustrations are lush and detailed:you could count the shingles in the roofs or the bricks in the walls.Green and a little yellow are the only colors in the book, emphasizing the spirit and colors of St. Pats in Jamie's sweater, the flag of Ireland and, of course, the lush green grasses of the Emerald Isle.
Because it's not a book about the history or legend of St. Patrick, there is no reason to limit it's reading only to March 17th.Teachers would find it a useful book in teaching both about Ireland and, of course, proving that smaller doesn't mean incapable.A fine book by Bunting and Brett, and highly recommended.

Louis Pauwels and Jacques Bergier's THE MORNING OF THE MAGICIANS: SECRET SOCIETIES, CONSPIRACIES, AND VANISHED CIVILIZATIONS was first published in 1960 and offers insights into scientific evidence that supports the existence of paranormal activity, telepathy, and the occult in human history. From masterminds behind early civilizations' growth to connections between alchemy and modern physics and Hitler's psychic potentials, THE MORNING OF THE MAGICIANS offers a wide-ranging history. A fine new age library addition.

Product Description:
The groundbreaking and classic study that first popularized occultism, alchemy, and paranormal phenomena in the 1960s
- Provides profound insights into our perceptions of reality, telepathy, mutants, and parallel universes
- Reveals the occult influences on the Nazis and introduces the alchemist Fulcanelli and the work of Charles Fort and Gurdjieff
- Over Half a Million Copies Sold
This groundbreaking, international bestseller, first published in 1960, couples profound insights into the hidden history of humanity and our perceptions of reality with the scientific evidence that supports the existence of paranormal activity, telepathy, and extraterrestrial communications. The first book to explore in depth the Nazi fascination with the occult, Pauwels and Bergier also broke new ground with their study of pyramidology, alchemy and its close kinship with atomic energy, and the possibility of a widespread mutation of humanity that would herald the dawn of a new age for the earth. Their study of secret societies, starting with the Rosicrucians, suggests that such changes are actively being pursued in the present day by a "conspiracy" of the most spiritually and intellectually advanced members of the human race.
The Morning of the Magicians also explores the anomalous events collected by Charles Fort, the work of Gurdjieff, and the history of the mysterious Fulcanelli, who was widely believed to have manufactured the philosopher's stone--which provided the Nazis the motive for mounting an intensive search for him during their occupation of Paris. Much more than a collection of strange facts defying conventional wisdom, this book remains a sophisticated philosophical exploration of repressed phenomena and hidden histories that asks its readers to look at reality with ever "awakened eyes."

It is no wonder that after the publication of this novel people assumed Jean Rhys had committed suicide. It is a dark, introverted, soul-searching novel. It's brilliance lies in the compassion with which Sasha is treated. This is a woman who is unquestionably at the end of her tether. Life occurs almost unconsciously to her. She drinks non-stop and thinks of fashion before eating. But these aren't superficial choices. They are the few soft whispers of a woman about to go over the brink. Throughout the novel you are given brief glimpses of her past as a shop assistant and the troubles in her marriage. In themselves the troubles which result from them are not ample enough to drive a normal woman to such desperation. You feel that the reason for her state of mind is more the result of a profound neglect of her individual spirit by men. She is led on to believe in a progression of being, but is abandoned to clutch at the ghosts of her old haunts in Paris. This is a sharp contrast to the ideas that we have about artistic scene of Paris in this time period. It is a more sincerely concentrated personal experience than most accounts. It is interesting to think of the end in contrast to the jubilant yeses of Molly Bloom in Ulysses. Sasha's yes is one of doom and resignation to a world that has flown past her.
Despite its depressing character, this novel is a fascinating look at a tendency to sink into a psychological state often ignored. It is also a subtle portrayal of an identity built on a knife's edge. Luckily, Ms Rhys did survive this novel (however unhappily). It is a miracle that she did considering the violent lack of self worth of Sasha; to have imagined such a person must have been terrifying indeed.

Sasha Jensen has returned to Paris, the city of both her happiest moments and her most desperate. Her past lies in wait for her in cafes, bars, and dress shops, blurring all distinctions between nightmare and reality. When she is picked up by a young man, she begins to feel that she is still capable of desires and emotions. Few encounters in fiction have been so brilliantly conceived, and few have come to a more unforgettable end.

John Harricharan's books are extremely enjoyable for all readers.John writes in simple language about what might be the most important question for all of us...Is life over when we die? Having lost a love one, I have searched this question often. Being a very analytical person, I needed a practical answer.John's stories provide not only an explanation but also forces the readers to do more "soul" searching on their own to find answers to not only this question but to many of the questions we have.
Readers will find it difficult to put John's books down.

When the road seems long and dark...A message of strength and renewal for us all.
The light of hope vanished in John when his wife died, leaving him with two children to raise and the rest of his life to rethink. Surrounded by a haze of emptiness and futility, he could only dimly recall the joys of his former existenceand the strange, miraculous encounters he had once had with a wise "businessman" named Gideon.
Then the light reappeared as Gideon returned, introducing john to magical new worlds of inner peace, understanding and love. Slowly, and almost despite himself, John felt his grief turning to hope, his despair to trimuph, and his worries to a playful curiosity about what lay ahead.
In this intimate story of loss, devastation and rebirth, John Harricharan mystically blends personal experience with parable to reawaken the infinite beauty, compassion and power, which exist within us all.

Reading this book felt, for me, like reading a novelization of a made-for-TV murder mystery circa 1986.In style, tone, and characterization--really everything except the rather persistent pop culture references--Al Roker's "The Morning Show Murders" harkens back to Murder She Wrote, Matlock, Father Dowling, and other classic TV fare: a bit of murder and intrigue, all handled fairly comically, with a large cast of unique personalities in a pretty unrealistic situation.
Who can protest a cast of major and minor characters which includes a celebrity chef, an all-business TV executive, a security guard named after Andy Warhol, a mysterious all-knowing Yoda-like figure in a track suit, an obnoxious restaurant hostess, a lesbian comic book artist, a couple gruff and clueless cops, an ex-terrorist-turned-bestselling-author, and, of course, a faceless and legendary international assassin who leaves drawings behind at murder scenes?Yes, they're all packed in here pretty tightly, and I give this novel four big stars for sheer zany fun, even though, in the end, it's a bit like a cross-country road trip: plenty to see along the way, but nothing really matters much till you reach your destination.Clues, and characters, are introduced and come and go, and in the end, as usual, an amateurish detective finds a single, subtle clue that wraps everything up with a neat little bow. But, you know, I expected nothing less. This would be a great read on the beach or on an airplane.Just don't expect to remember any of it once you close the book.

We've loved every other one of the Magic Tree House series, but this one (although interesting to me, the parent) was a bit too scary for my six year old son.We only read half way through it and that was it for him(the mummies were too much for him -- yet he didn't mind the ghost in theWild West book). So parents, be prepared for this one if your child isyoung or a bit sensitive.

Child of the Morning: A Novel [Paperback] Review
Child of the Morning is Pauline Gedge's historical fiction account of the life of Pharoah (or Queen depending on your source) Hatshepsut. In this work, Pauline Gedge recreates the world of Pharoah Thothmoses I, specifically the court where his two children a son, Thothmoses II, and a daughter, Hatshepsut, grow up. As we watch these children grow, it becomes clear that Hatshepsut is suited to rule while her brother is not. There is however a problem. Egypt has never had a female Pharoah. Can she be accepted by the military? The People? The Priesthood? and the Nobility? Or would Egypt prefer a male Pharoah who is not fit to be called a god? How will Thothmoses I deal with the issue of succession and how can he assure that his wishes are carried out?
Child of the Morning is a wonderful book of politics, social commentary and wisdom. It is truly an incredible piece of literature as well as an outstanding character study of the main female character, Hatshepsut. I cannot give this book a higher recommendation and I thank Ms. Gedge each day for writing such an amazing work.

Art and life.Life and art.The lines pf demarcation aren't' visible in this richly imagined story of the relationship between Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt (1847 - 1926) and her older sister, Lydia, who sometimes served as Cassatt's model.Using five of the artist's paintings as springboards the author offers a moving story of courage and creativity, while she renders a fascinating study of the times in which the women lived.
Although suffering painfully, from a terminal illness, Bright's disease, Lydia continues to model for her sister, relentlessly scanning each finished portrait as if it foretold her future.Chessman conceives of Lydia as a study in patience and resignation, imagining thatpainter Edgar Degas, who often visited the sittings, said to Lydia, "You show me how to live, if only I could do it as you do."
In addition to exploring a unique sibling bond "Lydia Cassatt Reading The Morning Paper" suggests aspects of Cassatt's daring life, hints at a liaison with the dynamic Edgar Degas, and presents thumbnail sketches of her interaction with such artists as Renoir and Caillebotte.
Lydia, we learn, died in 1882 while Cassatt lived to create for over thirty more years.
Rather than a sad reflection on a too short life, Chessman, with pitch-perfect prose, has penned a celebration of family, love, and art.

Morning Glory (Paperback) Review
It always amazes me how consistently brilliant Lavyrle Spencer is. Even if Im not crazy about all of her books, there is no arguing that the woman can write.... "Morning Glory" is a perfect example of Spencer's enormous talent for making the characters and the scenery enveloping them leap to life. "Morning Glory" was a heartwarmingtale of Will and Elly- two lost souls who had known little happiness in their lives, but who found love in eachother. I LOVED this book. I thought that the characters growth was a wonder to watch and I enjoyed every moment. My only quibble with this book was that I felt that there wasn't enough romantic tension...Elly and Will proclaimed their love too early on for my taste, but regardless the story was enthralling. All in all a fantastic read...

I bought this book as a result of watching an interview of Mr Smerconish on CNN (I believe) which gave me the strong impression that it would discuss what goes on in talk radio, and television "news" - how various news outlets slant their opinions, how they qualify people to interview, how they choose and present the facts, etc. I was disappointed to find out that this book does very little of that.
I do find Mr Smerconish to be an interesting person. I had never heard of him before (my fault, probably). I agree with him on some things, disagree on others, but appreciate the fact that he does not toe a party line, much to the consternation of some ideologues, apparently. He is very independent and his own man. Republicans who are worried about the future of the party may want to read this book.
My problem with the book, however, is that it is mostly about him and not, as I thought it would be, about TV and radio news programs. It is really an autobiography, somewhat interesting but a little too self-serving for my tastes. In some ways, apologetic.
The footnotes and references are almost a waste. Don't spend a lot of time going to the back of the book to read them if you expect to find references to material that will add to what he has said. They are mostly references to newspaper articles, and many times even to his own columns and radio interviews of others. I have not actually tried to go to the websites referenced, but I suspect that many are so outdated that I wouldn't be able to access them anyway. I mean, why quote someone and add a footnote that says something like "Colin Powell interviewed by Michael Smerconish, Michael Smerconish Show?"
In short, I kept waiting for the good stuff but never got it.
