And There Was Light: Autobiography of Jacques Lusseyran, Blind Hero of the French Resistance [Paperback] Review

And There Was Light: Autobiography of Jacques Lusseyran, Blind Hero of the French Resistance [Paperback]Harper Collins just came out with their list of the 100 best spiritual books of the20th Century.Yes, another list, but this one intrigued me enough to want to sample the books on the list. And that is how Icameacross this remarkable book.Jacques Lusseyran was blinded in an accidentat the age of 8, yet was a major force in the French Resistance duringWorld War II, was betrayed and spent time in a Concentration Camp. This isNOT anotherholocaust memoir. Insteadit is an odd, inspiring, beautifullyand simplywritten story, detailinghow one man lived a full spiritual lifedespite blindness and the presence ofgreat evil.Blindness was not a"handicap" to Lusseyran, instead he reacted to the world inamazing ways. It was a mysticism born out ofcircumstances, not theology.Few books can overwhelm the cynic in me.For a time, this one did.I havesent this book to friends and relatives, who were as surprised and moved asI was. And There Is Light may change you.

On Living and Dying [Paperback] Review

On Living and Dying [Paperback]Once in a while, a book comes along that causes radical changes in your approach to the important life issues. This is one of those books.A friend gave me a copy ten years ago, which I read while on retreat at the Abbey of Gethsemani. As a traditional Christian, I found the straight-forward approach uncomfortable and a little threatening, especially because it challenged many of my "factual" truths. No problem, my beliefs can handle it, right?Wrong!I couldn't shake the feeling that Krishnamurti's ideas needed to be examined again without the baggage of pre-conceived notions.I've recently re-read the book, and while I'm still struggling with the material, I find that much of what he reveals MUST be taken seriously. It's also interesting that now I find his teachings are not inconsistent with those of Jesus (although they are at odds of much of what the church teaches). He talks about "dying" to everything, Jesus talks about selling all you have and following him.He talks about life, death, truth and love being here now, Jesus talks about the kingdom of heaven being at hand. Etc., etc.Be ready for "in-your-face" directness, but also be ready for troubling. but awesome material.

Product Description:
Reveals that the fear of death is not rooted in physical pain, or in leaving loved ones, but in the fear that some essential part of what we are will not continue. Krishnamurti explains that to comprehend death, which is so inseparably joined with life, we must come to it with a fresh understanding, free of learned attitude and preconceptions.
A thematic selection from the seminars over Krishnamurti' s entire lifetime. Drawing from talks from Bombay to Amsterdam and London to Seattle, progressing from the early thirties until the later 70's.

God's Mercies Are New Every Morning (too bad the kids get home in the afternoon) (Kindle Edition) Review

God's Mercies Are New Every MorningWow!This is clearly the best book I've ever written!A page-turner from the beginning to the part where I totally cash in on it!!I've never made more money off the exploits of my children!!

In the words of my mother,"I'm so proud of you Richie!!Now, when are you having more grandkids?"

In the words of my father, "For this we sent him to four years of college? He says school instead we get jokes about our lovely grandkids??!?I want my money back...."

According to the New York Times (assuming they'd review it this way, which they haven't, but I'm sure it would go something like this):

"This is clearly the best book ever written ever!!!Burn all the books you've ever owned and buy multiples copies of this one!!!"

Seriously, if you don't buy this book you're a terrible person and totally support terrorists or something. If you DO buy this book you have my personal guarantee you are an awesome person!

Because...if you're not having fun you missed the point of it all :)

Product Description:
A funny, inspirational book written by a father of six and a husband of one.Richie shares his adventures being a police officer in the arctic, chasing polar bears out of the yard, and cleaning peanut butter off of the walls (and baby).

A light book that will keep you laughing and inspire you to never, ever have kids.

Excerpt from the book:

"When Tam got home I proudly showed her the wreckage of the kitchen as evidence that I managed to accomplish what only a father would call a successful dinner. Most of the children were covered in orange cheese-flavored sauce to which was clinging a surprisingly large quantity of intact macaroni noodles (and for some reason a Lego or two). They looked like some sort of monsters from the original Star Trek.I can only assume the toddlers found some sort of candy somewhere because their hands from fingers to elbows and their faces from chins to foreheads were covered in some sort of colorful sticky substance that vaguely suggested they had recently killed and eaten a clown.

I pointed out that Zak and Hannah ate macaroni. Caleb had eaten half a bowl of macaroni, three graham crackers he found under the couch, and an orange crayon.

My smile faltered slightly as I indicated the toddlers, but I just pointed at them like the stains upon them and all the furniture within lunge distance was de-facto proof that they must have eaten something.

Tam then closed her eyes, pinched her nose, and took a deep breath in such a way that suggested she was overcome with emotion at how well I'd done.Obviously I'm the best husband ever.

However, the vein which started throbbing on her forehead suggested that she wasn't as entirely thrilled as I expected her to be.I assumed this can only mean something went wrong at the library.

Tam then asked if the baby has been fed

I quickly masked my look of horror/panic as I realized I have no idea where I left the baby!!!"

One Tuesday Morning (September 11 Series #1) [Paperback] Review

One Tuesday Morning [Paperback]Jake Bryan is a firefighter with the FDNY, the only thing he has ever wanted to do. His Christian faith gives him the strength to get through each day, both on the job and at home. His wife Jamie has run from God most of her life. After a tragic childhood, she doesn't believe God would want anything to do with her or her failures. She worries constantly about Jake and his safety. The two have a daughter, Sierra, who is the light of their lives. Jake has been praying for God to make a statement in Jamie's life to bring her to know Him.
Eric Michaels is a businessman striving for success at any cost. And his greatest cost is his family. He has slowly shut out his wife and young son. His wife is at the end of her rope. When Eric returns from his business trip to New York, she is not sure whether she can continue marriage with him or not.
These men meet in the stairwell of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The tower collapses and only one survives, burned and suffering from amnesia. Jake's supervisor recognizes the man as Jake, but is it really him? Jamie works with him to re-gain his lost memory, and in the process learns about God and her husband through his Bible and journals. Which man survived the disaster? Can God redeem even those who seem completely lost?
I was touched by this fictionalized account of the calamity that affects us all.Ms. Kingsbury states that it was her way of working through the grief, and I am glad she wrote this book. The characters are very true to life, seeking God's will as well as running from it. Eric and Jamie go through tremendous transformation as God becomes real to both of them. It would be difficult to finish this novel and remain closed about God's hand in our lives.
I highly recommend ONE TUESDAY MORNING. It isn't a book that can be read all in one sitting. It takes time to experience, especially the scenes that take place on September 11. Ifelt as if I was right there with the characters in the book. For an emotional, yet uplifting look at God's everlasting love and mercy in our lives, ONE TUESDAY MORNING is not to be missed.
