Morning and Evening Burgundy [Leather Bound] Review

Morning and Evening Burgundy [Leather Bound]Spurgeon's material in "Morning and Evening" is excellent. This is not a review of his work.It is however a review of this particular edition.

Whitaker House has offered up an abridged version of the content and has done a very poor job of proofing it.I have found the book difficult to read, not because I have problems with British sentence structure of over a century ago, but because I often have to re-read a sentence to parse what it was supposed to say due to mistakes in typesetting or typographical errors.

Here is a sample from the February 24th morning reading, "He usually give it in such a measure that there is not room to receive it," or "'As thy day, so shall they strength be.'"(That should be "gives" and "thy strength".)This reads like your average 13-year-old's Internet post, not like the writing of a well-educated man of God that was published by someone that cared about what was being said.

My advice?Look for a better copy.

Product Description:
A wealth of Biblical teaching from Spurgeon. He meditates on two portions of scripture each day with applications that are very relevant for contemporary Christians. Spurgeon's characteristically pithy comments hit home with a wit and elegance rarely found in other writing. Spurgeon was, primarily, a pastor and this shows with the concern he shows here for the hearts of the reader. Christians, young and old, will find his comments challenging, stimulating and direct. This edition is in a high quality diary style finish, with a gilt page edging, a presentation page and a bookmark.
This is the most complete and unabridged version available of the best-selling Morning and Evening devotions. The luxury finish makes an excellent gift for a business associate, graduate or relative.

Manna in the Morning (Paperback) Review

Manna in the MorningThis daily devotional is unique and well rounded, as it provides a daily scripture and word regarding it. However, it strengthens your daily walk by encouraging you to draw closer by a "Manna Moment" which gets you thinking deeper and challenges you to do something either with yourself or for someone else.
I have learned much and it seems God is speaking to me about the very subject of the day in this devotional daily. Great read!

The tasty morsels of Scripture in this book are the result of the author's application of Romans 15:4 which says: Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.

Joy In The Morning (Paperback) Review

Joy In The MorningI just finished this book, and I have to tell you, I was SO BLESSED by the testimony that is revealed in this book!I can certainly see why God had Amy write this book!

"Joy in the Morning" is an awesome testimony about not only walking in faith, but of God's faithfulness, as well!It is an inspiring story of Amy's 4 year old daughter, Makenna. This little girl will make you cry when you see the pain and torment her little body was going through, and then watch her turn into such a little trooper!Wow!Her belief in Jesus healing her body was incredible! God is so faithful!!!

This book not only showed me the true love the Lord has for us, but it showed me what can happen in your life, if you truly (I said, TRULY) give your life --- ALL OF IT --- to Him!All of it, means ALL OF IT; including our children!

This is a story of a mother who just had to stand back and watch as the Lord worked a miracle in her daughter's life, and in the lives her daughter touched while in the hospital!Just an amazing little girl!

If you have not already ordered this book, do so now!It will truly bless you!Amy does such a wonderful job at explaining faith, and walking in faith, and what a struggle it was to "let go and let God", it will truly minister to you!

God's Mercies Are New Every Morning (too bad the kids get home in the afternoon) (Kindle Edition) Review

God's Mercies Are New Every MorningWow!This is clearly the best book I've ever written!A page-turner from the beginning to the part where I totally cash in on it!!I've never made more money off the exploits of my children!!

In the words of my mother,"I'm so proud of you Richie!!Now, when are you having more grandkids?"

In the words of my father, "For this we sent him to four years of college? He says school instead we get jokes about our lovely grandkids??!?I want my money back...."

According to the New York Times (assuming they'd review it this way, which they haven't, but I'm sure it would go something like this):

"This is clearly the best book ever written ever!!!Burn all the books you've ever owned and buy multiples copies of this one!!!"

Seriously, if you don't buy this book you're a terrible person and totally support terrorists or something. If you DO buy this book you have my personal guarantee you are an awesome person!

Because...if you're not having fun you missed the point of it all :)

Product Description:
A funny, inspirational book written by a father of six and a husband of one.Richie shares his adventures being a police officer in the arctic, chasing polar bears out of the yard, and cleaning peanut butter off of the walls (and baby).

A light book that will keep you laughing and inspire you to never, ever have kids.

Excerpt from the book:

"When Tam got home I proudly showed her the wreckage of the kitchen as evidence that I managed to accomplish what only a father would call a successful dinner. Most of the children were covered in orange cheese-flavored sauce to which was clinging a surprisingly large quantity of intact macaroni noodles (and for some reason a Lego or two). They looked like some sort of monsters from the original Star Trek.I can only assume the toddlers found some sort of candy somewhere because their hands from fingers to elbows and their faces from chins to foreheads were covered in some sort of colorful sticky substance that vaguely suggested they had recently killed and eaten a clown.

I pointed out that Zak and Hannah ate macaroni. Caleb had eaten half a bowl of macaroni, three graham crackers he found under the couch, and an orange crayon.

My smile faltered slightly as I indicated the toddlers, but I just pointed at them like the stains upon them and all the furniture within lunge distance was de-facto proof that they must have eaten something.

Tam then closed her eyes, pinched her nose, and took a deep breath in such a way that suggested she was overcome with emotion at how well I'd done.Obviously I'm the best husband ever.

However, the vein which started throbbing on her forehead suggested that she wasn't as entirely thrilled as I expected her to be.I assumed this can only mean something went wrong at the library.

Tam then asked if the baby has been fed

I quickly masked my look of horror/panic as I realized I have no idea where I left the baby!!!"

We Side With the Morning: Daily Prayers to the God of Hope (Paperback) Review

We Side With the Morning: Daily Prayers to the God of HopeThousands of prayer books flow from publishers, but it's hard to find a fresh voice that just might startle us into a moment of awe. True awe--a rare and rejuvenating spiritual experience. Seeking this kind of surprising daily prayer book for 2010, I was pleased to find that "We Side with the Morning" was written by a poet now in his 80s.

William Cleary is a former Jesuit who left the priesthood years ago to marry and raise a family. Both of his grown sons are musicians. His wife is a Unitarian minister. In a family like this, beautiful prayers seem to blossom on a daily basis.

As I am growing older myself, like most Baby Boomers, I'm humbled by life's daily crises and my own human limitations--but a boundless faith pushes me out of bed each morning to rejoin the global community. That's why I love prayers like one that Cleary calls "May It Be So: Giving thanks despite imperfection." The prayer includes these words: "You have made us as you made us: imperfect, crudely shaped, dull of mind--but full of promise, every single one of us. Give us insight and gratitude for things as they are."

To that, we all can say: Amen!

Product Description:
In this timely book of candid, powerful, and thought-provoking prayers, William Cleary gives courage and hope to those who find it difficult to connect with the divine in the midst of uncertainty. Cleary's newest work is an engaging expression of faith in a God who often seems entirely "other"―and it recognizes that true faith is not bought cheaply. We Side with the Morning provides 365 prayers on subjects ranging from doubt, social injustice, and the inevitability of death―to joy, peace, and the mystery of a loving, personal God who hears the prayers of each person.

Good Morning Beautiful : Winning the battle over seizures [Paperback] Review

Good Morning Beautiful : Winning the battle over seizures [Paperback]This wonderful book talks about winning the battle over seizures but to me it went far beyond that to illustrate the imperative we have as Mothers to advocate for our children. To listen to our inner voices and alarms because they matter. This story is not just for people with children who are suffering with seizure disorders but for any parent who is not being heard or who is considering disregarding what their gut is telling them.

At two-and-a-half, Christina was autistic. She didn t speak and had the cognitive ability of an infant. With one-hundred seizures a day, her life was being ripped away by a relentless villain epilepsy. When doctors gave up, we hung on to hope and became her advocates, researching, praying and believing for a miracle. A special diet, with roots in scripture, became the first miracle. Christina proved nothing is impossible when she repeated words to a song, Good Morning Beautiful. Extremely delayed, it was a huge milestone. Her story caught the attention of the national recording artist who recorded the song and prior to brain surgery, people around the world began praying for her. Now seizure and autism free, therapists cite services are no longer needed as Christina s file doesn t match the patient. She made honor roll and still sings Good Morning, Beautiful.

All those mornings . . . at the Post The 20th Century in Sports from Famed Washington Post Columnist Shirley Povich (Paperback) Review

All those mornings . . . at the Post The 20th Century in Sports from Famed Washington Post Columnist Shirley PovichAn interesting conversation took place the other day. I mentioned to my grandfather, now in his early 80s, that I had just bought the new book entitled "All those Mornings...at the Post." And he responded with, "I grew up reading Shirley Povich."

My response: "So did I, and I am 25." And so did my father. That's the amazing thing about Povich - he linked generations. He wrote about stars from Walter Johnson to Michael Jordan and everyone in between.

As a freelance sports writer, and former sports editor of my college newspaper, the Towerlight in Towson, Md., Povich was my biggest inspiration growing up and I would be willing to bet that most other sportswriters or aspiring sportswriters feel the same way.

I tried to put in perspective to my wife how influential he was. I said he is the Humphrey Bogart of sports writing. He is the epitome of what newspapermen should be and he was just as good in 1994 as he was in 1924.

The amazing thing is he never retired and wrote his final column the day before he died in 1998. This book brings his most important columns to life and for people of my generation we get to live events such as the Senators' only World Series title in 1924 for the first time.

This book is a treasure and is highly recommended to anyone who has ever read a sports column. Chances are the person who wrote the column did so because Shirley L. Povich inspired him.

Morning Notes: 365 Meditations To Wake You Up (Prather, Hugh) (Paperback) Review

Morning Notes: 365 Meditations To Wake You Up"Over the years I have resisted several requests for a book of 365 thoughts because I felt there were a number of excellent ones on the market, and I didn't think I had much to add. But a year or so ago I noticed that I have certain ideas that I keep turning to when I wake up in the morning...So this book is a little different in that it contains what I personally need to hear-over and over." - From the book

The thoughts we think upon awakening have a ripple affect. If our minds are filled with anxious anticipation, regret, self-loathing, worry, or judgment, our day will likely unfold with chaos in its wake.

Fortunately, author Hugh Prather has written a delightful devotional filled with sage advice, spiritual clarity, and practical ideals in his book Morning Notes: 365 Meditations to Wake You Up. Each meditation brings readers closer to present moment awareness, gentleness, forgiveness, and stillness.

Some of the wonderful observations in Morning Notes include:

"Problems do not justify unkindness...My chronic need to rush signals that I am willing to attack my body and fracture my mind. Kindness to myself as well as to others must be a part of the process or else it is ultimately meaningless."

"The journey back to God is the journey back to now. To ascend into heaven is to sink so deeply into now that we lose interest in past regrets and anxious anticipations...To think about what it means to be present is not to be present. Little children are so unsophisticated that they run around, giggle, stare at strangers, taste rocks, and just altogether have way too much fun. They're so clueless, they don't even know they have mastered advanced metaphysical concepts and mystical techniques. Today, I too will practice being clueless."

"The divine does not `test' us or give us `trials' before blessing us. How could God increase pressure, expand the rules, or set new demands if divine Love is changeless and the peace of God is eternal? We know when we are hearing the voice of God because the opposite happens. Suddenly all the pressure is lifted and we feel loved just the way we are. This is also the gift I must give those around me."

"How could one person's way possibly be superior to another person's way if God is leadings us all? If I believe that my spiritual path is superior, my path is not spiritual. Spirit is One. The divine doesn't contain degrees of correctness. Either we all share the same Truth and ultimate destiny, or there is no truth and we are lost in a reality of private perception and momentary interpretation."

I enjoyed reading Morning Notes: 365 Meditations to Wake You Up all the way through, finding much wisdom, humor, and spiritual nourishment in its pages. This book isn't divided by date, only number, so you can pick it up at your leisure-reading one passage at a time or perhaps a few. I look forward to dipping into this book at random, whenever I need a pick-me-up or a daily dose of a potent spiritual vitamin.

Product Description:
This is a book of great beginnings-365 of them! How we start each and every day affects everything-body, mind, spirit, family, work. We can begin in a combative mood, fighting with how things are, or we can begin in a peaceful mood, helping ourselves construct things the way we want them to be.Hugh Prather, in his writing and his life, opts for the latter. And in these Morning Notes, he invites us to live as if we think our world and the people in it are worth caring about, worth taking time for, worth changing.Love, forgiveness, self-healing, change-yes! Self-loathing, judgment, anger, prevaricating-no! The former help us realize our Oneness within ourselves, with other human beings, and with God. The latter prevent this realization. These 365 simple meditations take us a long way toward our spiritual home. Individually and as a whole they speak to the spiritual task of the 21st century-to wake up to our own responsibility for what happens to us.

Hearing from God Each Morning: 365 Daily Devotions (Faith Words) (Hardcover) Review

Hearing from God Each Morning: 365 Daily DevotionsRelationships. They aren't easy and good ones don't just happen. If you want a good, strong relationship with someone, you have to work at it.You have to make a commitment. The more we invest in a relationship with another who cares for us, the better it will be.And the same goes with God.If we truly want a good, strong relationship where we can solely rely on God, we must make a commitment and work at it.

Joyce Meyer's Hearing from God Each Morning--365 Daily Devotions can help you strengthen your relationship with God through her daily meditations. This guide serves as a reminder to what is really important and to be able to recognize God's voice through all the noise of the world.

The readings are short and begin with a biblical quote followed by a short essay by Joyce. It ends with God's Word for You Today.I found these daily readings to be insightful and powerful. They applied to everyday life and reminded me where my focus needed to be at.Joyce writes in a down-to-earth clear cut manner, and really drives her point home. The readings are inspirational and positive. They really encourage you to grasp God's message and do His works.

I have many daily devotionals and usually find I read a few pages and the book gets pushed by the wayside. This one, however, will not.I was eager to read the next pages and will continue to reread this book. This devotional made me think more about my relationship with God and listen more closely to his Word.

This is a great book for yourself and would also make a wonderful gift.

Morning and Evening: A New Edition of the Classic Devotional Based on The Holy Bible, English Standard Version [Hardcover] Review

Morning and Evening: A New Edition of the Classic Devotional Based on The Holy Bible, English Standard Version [Hardcover]Alistair Begg, pastor (Parkside Church in Cleveland, Ohio), author, and speaker, has done a magnificent job in updating this devotional classic. Begg's updates enable a wider audience to enjoy and be nourished by Spurgeon's timeless writing. Although this devotional (in its unrevised version) can be accessed daily on multiple websites, I have found myself to be more consistent in my reading when I hold a hard copy in my hands.
Spurgeon's pastoral warmth and thirst for evangelism come through strongly in these short devotionals. His focus on all three members of the Trinity is excellent as he beckons us further in serving Christ. I have also found his connection with the individual reader to be outstanding as he instructs and motivates toward change and action.
Granted, some of Spurgeon's interpretation may be dated (for instance, he interprets Song of Solomon as an allegory between Christ and the Church). However, this clearly is the minority, and the timeless nature of his topics far outweigh any problem this poses.
I have used this devotional off and on for many months now, and have many friends who have also been encouraged by their reading of it.
This 2003 edition is based on the English Standard Version (ESV), a recent translation respected for its readability and faithfulness to the text. Among the many Christian leaders who endorse the ESV are J.I. Packer (Regent College), Chuck Colson (Prison Fellowship Ministries), John Piper (Bethlehem Baptist Church), and R.C. Sproul (Ligonier Ministries).
