Like an earlier reviewer, I also own the four-volume set of the Liturgy of the Hours.I do enjoy the additional readings and the somewhat nerdy activity of finding my way around the complete liturgy. But for pure prayer value, "Shorter Christian Prayer" is the book.It has the entire four-week psalter for the key prayers of the day, Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, as well as the same Night Prayers as the larger volumes. What it is missing are the special readings and intercessions for feasts and memorials--but even those special days are built around the same psalms printed here.For me, on my commute, Shorter Christian Prayer is less distracting and much nicer in the hand than the standard Christian Prayer or Liturgy of the Hours.It has larger print than either.It has the gospel canticles printed on the inside covers, a brilliant idea.Plus it is a LOT cheaper.

I have settled into this routine: each morning, a cup of tea and a "day" from Miller's "Celtic Devotions." This ritual fills me, opens possibility, sometimes admonishes, always inspires.

A "day" from Miller's pages is arranged like this... an opening prayer or meditation, then Morning Reading, Morning Prayer, Evening Reading and Evening Prayer. I take the whole day at once, knowing myself; I rarely come back to things like this when night descends.

Miller's poetic reflections move me. Bits of Psalm 119, which provide the Morning Reading reorient me. The rhythms of Celtic life and thought and verse, oft quoted from the "Carmina Gadelica" (a collection of Gaelic songs) take me to another time then bring me home... longing, musing, praying, dreaming, hoping, resting.

Daily Light on the Daily Path: The Classic Devotional Book For Every Morning and Evening in the Very Words of Scripture [Hardcover] Review

Daily Light on the Daily Path has served for centuries as a wonderful, uplifting morning and evening devotional. In the 1800s, Samuel Bagster would lead his family in morning and evening devotions (something all too lacking in most contemporary households) by compiling scripture references along central themes. His son Jonathan, remembering the power of his father's devotions, published the compiled verses years later as Daily Light on the Daily Path. Originally in the King James Version, Crossway has now published an edition using the English Standard Version, whose accuracy and literary beauty do justice to the original, and whose readability brings the 19th century classic into the 21st century.

I was initially highly skeptical about using this work as a means of daily devotion. I have never been one in favor of taking verses out of their immediate context. However, Bagster's work is a marvel. It is an inspirational work that carefully compiles the selections so that they are harmonized, yet their original intent is not lost. He made sure, as a good father should, to not twist the scriptures to his own meaning, but represent them to his family as they were meant to be read all along.

In some ways, it is not unlike using your bible's cross-reference system as a means of daily reading. The carefully selected verses around central themes are an enrichment, letting Scripture speak to Scripture. I have found this book to be just the start I need in the morning to begin my day in a mode of worship, as well as an equally positive reflection after a day of joy or toil. Now incorporating the ESV (my personal favorite for devotion, study, teaching, and preaching), Daily Light continues to serve the Christian in the beginning and end of his or her day in the Lord. This ranks alongside Charles H. Spurgeon's Morning and Evening and John Piper's Taste and See in my favorite devotional books, but Daily Light will always have a particularly special place for being exclusively and beautifully rendered in Scripture itself.

Having studied the previous nine volumes in the Hoffman series on prayer, I find this much awaited volume to be a great help.As has been the case in the earlier volumes Hoffman provides a wide range of perspectives from which we may extract greater meaning from the prayer service.Shabbat morning is for many of a difficult service to relate to.With only once weekly frequency and the various distractions of Shabbat it can be difficult to relate to the meaning of the prayers.Hoffman provides a wonderful introduction, although parts are often borrowed from previous volumes, and then a talmudic approach to the individual verses of prayer.I always found something new and something that enhanced my understanding of the prayer and this by a person that has been davening for years and also studying t'fillah with the help of many teachers and texts.

This kindle book was the best gift in our house this Christmas!My brother is 82 years old, a Catholic priest, and suffering from low vision due to macular degeneration.We gave him the kindle for Christmas and its enlarged print was a great help to him.The arrival of John L. Davis' "Liturgy of the Hours" made the gift just about perfect.He has been unable to pray his breviary prayers in recent months, and has found this particular version to be particularly inspiring.What a disappointment to find that January is unavailable!Please do whatever you can to help us get this book for those who so appreciate it!I, too, would gladly purchase the whole year at once.
