The Lawmaker (Hardcover) Review

The LawmakerAfter finishing The Lawmaker (gosh it took me a long time--sorry Rick) I was fairly convinced that the author was a former trial attorney...turns out that while he DOES work in law enforcement, being a lawyer wasn't his career...so kudos first off for writing a legal thriller without not actually BEING an attorney. My all-time favorite legal thriller is also NOT written by a former practicing lawyer (The Quiet Game by Greg Iles) so you're in good company as far as I can tell.

B-u-u-u-t The Lawmaker isn't exactly a full-on legal drama, either. It also adds the element of politics, bribery and a few other un-seemly underworld adjectives. Meet Wayne Lott, an attorney who seems to hit the jackpot when an opportunity to run for public office seems to fall right in his lap. As the majority of moral America already knows, politics are not as fancy as one may initially believe them to be. Pure as the driven snow? Hardly. And Mr. Lott discovers this the hard way as he quickly finds himself (literally) stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Now I have personally never had to choose between participating in Blackmail or possibly becoming victim to mob-like individuals bent on encouraging (ie: forcing) you to follow your 'pre-determined' path...but, I'd like to think I'd do the right thing. Does Wayne have what it takes to make the right choice? I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say finding out the answer is all part of the fun that is The Lawmaker. On the back of the book it says the book is a cross between Casino & The Firm, and I gotta say that particular description fits like a glove.

If you're looking for a tension-laced novel that doesn't follow the usual predictable pattern which seems to be a plague within the legal thriller genre these days, give The Lawmaker a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the outcome...I know I was.

Son of Hope [Hardcover] Review

Son of Hope [Hardcover]I have just finished reading David Berkowitz's book "Son of Hope". I remember the man he was when he was arrested, his face and piercing eyes. And I recently viewed on line the interviewswith David aired on CBS in New York City. On May 10th, I saw the segment entitled "bonus footage behind the scenes look at the "Son of Sam" Interviews, which I don't believe was aired on TV. They showed the man who they arrested as Son of Sam and the face of the man who has been transformed, saved and set free in Christ Jesus; now the Son of Hope and they don't even look like the same man.

David's journal on December 21, 2004 said it all. He doesn't even feel as though he is in prison except for the place that it is. He is a minister, a witness, of how a loving Christ can reach a man lost in sin, with no hope and change him into a helper, a servant reaching out to fellow prisoners, giving him a ministry within the prison walls. I am so impressed upon reading that David receives no profit from the sale of his book, that anything received goes to the parents/victims of his past crimes. Thank you David for writing the book. I certainly plan to share mine with others. See you in Heaven.

Product Description:
From later 1975 through 1977, over a 13-month period David Berkowitz went on a killing spree in the New York metropolitan area--a spree that left six people dead and seven wounded. When Berkowitz--dubbed the Son of Sam--was finally captured, he confessed to his crimes and in 1978 was sentenced to 365 consecutive years in prison.

Ten years into David's prison sentence a fellow inmate began to share with him Christ's love, hope, and forgiveness.Eventually,David Berkowitz accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and has been walking as a Christian for more than 18 years.

David's prison journals offer irrefutable evidence that God has indeed done a marvelous and miraculous work in this man's life.

Enriching Our Worship: Supplemental Liturgical Materials [Paperback] Review

Enriching Our Worship: Supplemental Liturgical Materials [Paperback]It is an oft-quoted joke that if you ask an Anglican to pray, the Anglican will first reach for a book.Reality is, as it often is, twice as true and half as funny, but for a particular reason. The Anglican liturgical style is very rooted in tradition, and while innovation is acceptable, it must be done in full recognition and appreciation of the past. The primary book used during worship services is the Book of Common Prayer, a book that has remained the centre of Anglican worship in various formats since the 1600s.Each national church has the option of modifying the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) for itself; as the various national churches strive to develop liturgies that their communities respond to fully, they develop trial liturgies and disseminate those in various ways. One typical way for the Episcopal church (the official branch of the Anglicans in America) is to publish supplemental liturgical books that may be used along side (almost never instead of) the Book of Common Prayer.
'Enriching Our Worship' is one of the latest of such books, deriving from the deliberations of the more recent General Conventions and the liturgies approved for consideration. One of the primary purposes of this book is inclusive and expansive language, incorporating the broader considerations of language highlighted by liberation theologians (among others) that traditional language tends to lean too exclusively toward patriarchal models of God and community. The language of many worship services, while of undeniable beauty and majesty, still feels more like an historical reenactment at times than a true worshipful experience for many people. The language of the eighteenth and nineteenth century still dominates, even in the 1979 American version of the Book of Common Prayer.
As the introduction states, this is simply another step in a continuing journey of the liturgical development in the life of the church. Some changes are rather minor -- for example, the 1979 BCP still has the simple substitution, derived from 1789, replacing the monarch of Britain with the President in the prayer formulations when praying for the leadership of the nation; this does not reflect the true separation-of-powers method of American governance, so Enriching Our Worship addresses this.At other places, the language shift is much more dramatic (hence, more controversial).avoiding masculine references to God, even in the traditional Father-Son-and-Holy-Spirit formulations.
The text includes revised versions of Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, an Order for Evening Worship (a variant of Compline), a Great Litany, a Holy Eucharist service (with three Eucharistic prayers), fraction anthems, blessings, and other prayers. This text also recognises the importance of music in worship, and adds as the final pages the musical notations for opening acclamations, prefaces, concluding doxologies, and fraction anthems.
There are notes about historical, social and theological considerations for many of the changes made, but these are cursory compared the volumes of text written regarding liturgical development in the church. This is a text meant to be used. However, it is also a text meant to be critiqued, and the church invites commentary back in various forms from those use it.
For Episcopalians and others attracted to liturgical forms of worship, this is a good text to have to show some of the modern ideas as they intersect traditional patterns of worship.

The Inner Journey: Views from the Christian Tradition (PARABOLA Anthology Series) [Paperback] Review

The Inner Journey: Views from the Christian Tradition [Paperback]This offering is one of eight in this excellent Parabola series which offers indepth introductions to the world's great religious traditions. The series takes its place alongside Paulist Press' now-famous Clasics in Western Spirituality series. It might be used alongside of the excellent one-volume survey The Study of Spirituality, Cheslyn Jones,et al, eds. (1986). The Inner Journey provides an anthology of 20th Century writers who have practiced and/or deeply studied the classic schools of Christian spirituality.

Its selections offer encouragement and enrichment for those seeking to practice the life of prayer and transformation which is variously described here. For some, perhaps with Protestant or Independent Christian background, it may be an initial invitation to a dimension of Christian life about which they have known only little.

Many 20th Century voices who have become major Christian teachers are to be found here: Paul Tillich, Thomas Merton, Bede Griffiths, David Steindl-Rast, and Thomas Keating. Helen Luke, known for her Christian-Jungian work with Dante's Divine Comedy is accompanied by more recently-emerging female teachers of Christian sprituality, Norvene Vest, Cynthia Bourgeault, Irma Zaleski, Helen Pagels and Kim Coleman Healy. Long-standing contributors to the West's understanding of the Orthodox tradition are included: Alexander Schmemann, Thomas Hopko, and Kallistos Ware. Among others Christopher Bamford, who along with Esther DeWaal and others who have mined the treasures of the Celtic Christian tradition, has two offerings. There is a fine bibliography.

In identifying these contemporary writers, we see how the great tradition of the Jesus Prayer and hesychasm in Orthodoxy and desert sprituality, the ethos and practice of Benedictine spirituality, the Christian stream of contemplative prayer, East-West integrations, as well as the gnostic tradition, are taken up and filtered through the minds and practices of contemporary Christian teachers and spritual masters.

Merton, Healy, and Keating speak with characteristic incisiveness about the transformation of consciousness, that path of dis-identification with the "false self" which must inevitably come with the inner journey. This is in resonance with the classic path of ascesis in both desert spirituality and Western contemplative prayer.

I cite just one piece as an example of the profundity of what these authors are inviting us to explore. James Cutsinger's article The Yoga of Hesychasm, based on Theophanus the Monk's "The Ladder of Divine Graces," will serve as a challening introduction for those readers unfamiliar with the writings of the Philokalia. A shorter, more compact piece that the classic of similar title by John of Climacus, this "ladder" tells of "pure prayer," "a strange holy energy," and the "gift of tears." In perceptive 20th century language, Cutsinger writes: The tears of the Ladder are not tears of selfish regret or refusal. On the contrary; they are the natural result of the ego's liquification.

If you are beginning or continuing the Christian path of transformation, the readings will serve you well.

Morning and Evening Burgundy [Leather Bound] Review

Morning and Evening Burgundy [Leather Bound]Spurgeon's material in "Morning and Evening" is excellent. This is not a review of his work.It is however a review of this particular edition.

Whitaker House has offered up an abridged version of the content and has done a very poor job of proofing it.I have found the book difficult to read, not because I have problems with British sentence structure of over a century ago, but because I often have to re-read a sentence to parse what it was supposed to say due to mistakes in typesetting or typographical errors.

Here is a sample from the February 24th morning reading, "He usually give it in such a measure that there is not room to receive it," or "'As thy day, so shall they strength be.'"(That should be "gives" and "thy strength".)This reads like your average 13-year-old's Internet post, not like the writing of a well-educated man of God that was published by someone that cared about what was being said.

My advice?Look for a better copy.

Product Description:
A wealth of Biblical teaching from Spurgeon. He meditates on two portions of scripture each day with applications that are very relevant for contemporary Christians. Spurgeon's characteristically pithy comments hit home with a wit and elegance rarely found in other writing. Spurgeon was, primarily, a pastor and this shows with the concern he shows here for the hearts of the reader. Christians, young and old, will find his comments challenging, stimulating and direct. This edition is in a high quality diary style finish, with a gilt page edging, a presentation page and a bookmark.
This is the most complete and unabridged version available of the best-selling Morning and Evening devotions. The luxury finish makes an excellent gift for a business associate, graduate or relative.

Morning by Morning (Hendrickson Christian Classics) [Hardcover] Review

Morning by Morning [Hardcover]I chanced upon this daily devotional in a local bookshop. I didn't know it was that good. I just bought it because I needed something extra for the morning before going off to work. As I began going through it, I realised how inspiring, motivating and crystal clear Spurgeon was able to explain some of the things about God. Along the way, it gave me many fresh revelations; things that I accepted previously as a Christian but never really understood why. As mentioned, many of the devotionals were inspiring and motivating. I really felt that God was speaking to me so lovingly through Spurgeon's devotionals. I'm not the only one who felt this way. Many of my friends and colleagues whom I shared the devotionals with felt the same way. Spurgeon's devotionals brought them so much closer to God and made some of them so much more passionate about God. This is definitely the first-choice daily devotional to go through first thing after we wake up every morning.

Wings of the Morning (Kensington Chronicles, Book 2) (Paperback) Review

Wings of the MorningLori Wick certainly is one of my favorite Christian/Romance writers, coming up to a close second to Dee Henderson. And probably my favorite books from Lori Wick are the Kensington Chronicles.
"Wings of the Morning" is about young Victoria "Smokey" Simmons, captain of one of the fastest ship of the Atlantic, the 'Aramis'. When her father, the famous Clancy, had died and left her alone in the world, she asks God to give her strength. Three years have passed and Smokey begins dreaming of life away from the sea. She wants to have a home and raise a family. When she meets another sea captain, Dallas Knight, she believes that her dreams can finally come true. Dallas, also hopelessly in love with her, shares her dreams. But when a scheming and evil pirate comes into their lives, Smokey and Dallas' hopes for the future may come to an end. Will they have the strength to overcome these painful events and to trust themselves into their Father in heaven?
A truly marvelous tale taking place in the mid-1800s, "Wings of the Morning" will have you swept into a world of romance and suspense. I love the wonderful characters of Smokey, who is young and shy yet has great spirit, and Dallas, who will do anything to protect her. They are so real that it is very hard not to like them and to hope they have their dreams fulfilled.
The other three books of the Kensington Chronicles are "The Hawk and the Jewel", "Who Brings Forth the Wind", and "The Knight and the Dove", all of them filled with romance and suspense, plus they all are about people who love and honor their God. My suggestion to you is that if you have never read any of Lori Wick's books, you should start with these four books.
And if you are looking for other terrific Christian/Romance books, I recommend all books by Dee Henderson, including the O'Malley Series, "Danger in the Shadows", and the Uncommon Heroes Series. But be ready for suspense, intrigue, and mystery, because these books are filled with them!

We Side With the Morning: Daily Prayers to the God of Hope (Paperback) Review

We Side With the Morning: Daily Prayers to the God of HopeThousands of prayer books flow from publishers, but it's hard to find a fresh voice that just might startle us into a moment of awe. True awe--a rare and rejuvenating spiritual experience. Seeking this kind of surprising daily prayer book for 2010, I was pleased to find that "We Side with the Morning" was written by a poet now in his 80s.

William Cleary is a former Jesuit who left the priesthood years ago to marry and raise a family. Both of his grown sons are musicians. His wife is a Unitarian minister. In a family like this, beautiful prayers seem to blossom on a daily basis.

As I am growing older myself, like most Baby Boomers, I'm humbled by life's daily crises and my own human limitations--but a boundless faith pushes me out of bed each morning to rejoin the global community. That's why I love prayers like one that Cleary calls "May It Be So: Giving thanks despite imperfection." The prayer includes these words: "You have made us as you made us: imperfect, crudely shaped, dull of mind--but full of promise, every single one of us. Give us insight and gratitude for things as they are."

To that, we all can say: Amen!

In this timely book of candid, powerful, and thought-provoking prayers, William Cleary gives courage and hope to those who find it difficult to connect with the divine in the midst of uncertainty. Cleary's newest work is an engaging expression of faith in a God who often seems entirely "other"―and it recognizes that true faith is not bought cheaply. We Side with the Morning provides 365 prayers on subjects ranging from doubt, social injustice, and the inevitability of death―to joy, peace, and the mystery of a loving, personal God who hears the prayers of each person.

The Monday Morning Church: Out of the Sanctuary and Into the Streets [Hardcover] Review

The Monday Morning Church: Out of the Sanctuary and Into the Streets [Hardcover]If you liked Jerry's book, "Love, Acceptance & Forgiveness," you will absolutely love this one! It powerfully describes how Christians can bring the love of Christ to the real world, in our existing lives while we're going about the normal routine of our day. It's continuing in Christ's model - not getting people to church, but meeting them in everyday life, not trying to convert them, just loving them in a very natural way that fits with who I am. This book has changed the way I approach my day, and everyone around me. Finally, someone has cut through the religious barriers to what our true mission is and how we can accomplish it in real life.

Product Description:
Fired by the passion to take the message of the gospel beyond the walls of the church, Jerry Cook challenges Christians to reconsider their role in society. He emphasizes that the church on Monday operates in the experience of the non believer where the greatest impact for God can occur. He encourages Christians to consider themselves strategically placed by Jesus Christ to go to the non believer rather than having them come to God. Drawing from the book of Ephesians, he challenges traditional thinking of how ministry occurs and what the church should be while presenting an exciting new paradigm of living for Christ.

Hearing from God Each Morning: 365 Daily Devotions (Faith Words) (Hardcover) Review

Hearing from God Each Morning: 365 Daily DevotionsRelationships. They aren't easy and good ones don't just happen. If you want a good, strong relationship with someone, you have to work at it.You have to make a commitment. The more we invest in a relationship with another who cares for us, the better it will be.And the same goes with God.If we truly want a good, strong relationship where we can solely rely on God, we must make a commitment and work at it.

Joyce Meyer's Hearing from God Each Morning--365 Daily Devotions can help you strengthen your relationship with God through her daily meditations. This guide serves as a reminder to what is really important and to be able to recognize God's voice through all the noise of the world.

The readings are short and begin with a biblical quote followed by a short essay by Joyce. It ends with God's Word for You Today.I found these daily readings to be insightful and powerful. They applied to everyday life and reminded me where my focus needed to be at.Joyce writes in a down-to-earth clear cut manner, and really drives her point home. The readings are inspirational and positive. They really encourage you to grasp God's message and do His works.

I have many daily devotionals and usually find I read a few pages and the book gets pushed by the wayside. This one, however, will not.I was eager to read the next pages and will continue to reread this book. This devotional made me think more about my relationship with God and listen more closely to his Word.

This is a great book for yourself and would also make a wonderful gift.

Note: I received a copy of this book from Hachette Book Group for review purposes. The opinions in this review are honest and my own.

But learning to recognize God's voice and the many ways in which He speaks is vital for following His plan. This devotional; drawing from How to Hear From God, Knowing God Intimately, and The Power Of Simple Prayershows the reader through a daily reminder, how God speaks through their own thoughts and feelings, their dreams, and the words of other people. Joyce asks the question, "Are you listening?" and shares how to do just that...on a daily basis.

Morning Coffee with James [Paperback] Review

Morning Coffee with James [Paperback]Morning Coffee with James is a delightful devotional that doesn't read like a devotional! Since I do like to read my Bible with a cup of coffee, it fit my quiet time perfectly. The appeal of this book is in its format. Renae presents the book of James in five main chapters: What We Have, What We Do, What We Say, What We Feel, and What We Give.Within those chapters, Renae provides morsels of truth that go so well with that cup of coffee.

The daily scripture is presented as the "first cup of coffee." After the first cup, the "cream and sugar" is a self-reflection question, followed by an encouraging prayer. Next there's the "second cup of coffee," in which Renae teaches through cross references, to be finished to the "last drop," which is a pithy quotation to finish that morning's coffee.

Renae has a conversational style that teaches rather than preaches to the reader. And every few chapters she throws in some interesting coffee facts or recipes that are just fun to know.

I'm so glad Renae chose James as her first in this series, as it is such a good book to curl up and get to know. Maybe her next devotional book will be on "He Brews!"
