Great Coffee Cakes, Sticky Buns, Muffins & More: 200 Anytime Treats and Special Sweets for Morning to Midnight [Hardcover] Review

Great Coffee Cakes, Sticky Buns, Muffins & More: 200 Anytime Treats and Special Sweets for Morning to Midnight [Hardcover]This is a GREAT baking book.I've tried several recipes already and they were all mouthwatering! So many varieties of baked goods are covered in this book, it's almost like a breakfast baking bible.Every recipe has an "At A Glance" box which tells you what kind(s) of pan you need, how to prep the pan, rising time (if necessary), oven temp, baking time, and difficulty so you can choose recipes based on time requirements, difficulty, etc.Recipes also tell you ahead of time if any advanced prep is required, such as refrigerating overnight.

The only problem I've found thus far is a few editorial errors, such as in muffin recipes that only make a dozen muffins... it tells you to use one muffin pan and put the oven rack in the lower third, but later says to rotate pans from top to bottom and back to front during cooking, which is clearly copied and pasted in every muffin recipe, including the ones that only use one pan. This isn't a huge deal. One glaring error, however, is in the "Streusels, Glazes, Frostings and Spreads" chapter. It appears that whoever edited this book, or possibly the printers, screwed up a couple of the recipes. The instructions for Carole's Favorite Streusel are correct, but then are repeated verbatim for part one of the Almond Crunch Streusel (which makes no sense for the ingredients required). Then under the Butter-Nut Streusel recipe, you can find the correct instructions for part one of the Almond Crunch Streusel. This isn't much of a pain once you realize the error. The Butter-Nut Streusel cannot be made, though, since there are no leftover instructions I could find under any of the other recipes in the section. After skimming through the book, I didn't find a single recipe that requires the Butter-Nut Streusel topping, so again, it's not extremely crucial.Just something to note if you try any recipes containing the Almond Crunch Streusel (I think there's only one).Otherwise, everything else seems to be very clear (with drawings to help out for complicated recipes, like braiding dough, etc).I still give this book 5 stars because I think that the errors I found are insignificant compared to just plain bad recipes you can find in other books.Buy this book, it's really great!Just be aware of that little mix-up with those 2 recipes.

Come The Morning [Paperback] Review

Come The Morning [Paperback]This was a terrific story.Realistic battles, several great characters, drama, romance, excitement, and triumph.

Waryk de Graham is a young fledgling warrior. He enters his very first battle at his father's side. When he awakens from an injury to his head, he finds his father lying dead beside him.The rest of his family lies dead as well.He is the last of the Graham name.Filled with rage, he pulls himself from the ground, grabs his father's sword, and runs to attack his enemies in surprise. He manages to kill most of them, as King David arrives with troops to help.David sees that Waryk has the potential to be a great champion. He knights Waryk there on the battle field.Waryk is now Sir Waryk de Graham, Laird Lion.He pledges his life to David's service, determined at the same time to use his father's sword to bring down the rest of his enemies.

Years later, with his father's sword in hand, Waryk has earned his king's respect.King David decides to reward Waryk by giving him a vast estate, complete with a beautiful heiress for his bride.

Mellyora MacAdin is the daughter of a former Viking warlord. Her father, Laird Adin, had long ago changed his ways and become one of King David's loyal lairds. However, he raises his daughter in the Viking tradition of teaching women to battle along with their men.Mellyora is a woman who can handle a sword against men who would attack her, her home, or her people.
When Laird Adin dies suddenly, his daughter travels to David's court in hopes of keeping her father's land, known as Blue Isle.David has already decided that Mellyora will marry Waryk, making certain that her Viking relatives can not seize the property.Mellyora escapes from the king's castle. She decides to run to her uncle's camp and ask him to help her keep Blue Isle long enough to convince the king that she is capable of defending it without a husband. While running through the forest at night, a man grabs her and questions her. When he discovers she is running from his king, Waryk makes a plan to bring her back to the castle. In the midst of his plan, he discovers that she is the woman intended to be his bride.

Over the next weeks, Mellyora and Waryk battle for control of her land and life. When the king makes it clear that he will give Blue Isle to Waryk, with or without marriage, Mellyora had no choice but to agree to marry him.Now they must work together to save Blue Isle and it's people from a secret enemy, the son of one of the men Waryk killed as a boy. This enemy, Ulric Hallsteader is determined to take Waryk's wife and land.He finds ways to attack while disguising himself as Mellyora's uncle, Daro of the Vikings. If he can cause war between Waryk and Daro, he can weaken them both. This will open Blue Isle for attack. There were numerous terrific characters in this story. They made a truly magnificent tale. There are many men and women to root for, and plenty to fear. This keeps the story exciting and it makes putting the book down very difficult.(Hence the dark circles under my eyes after reading into the early hours of the morning.)The romances that develop are gripping and deep. While reading, you feel the joy, frustration, fear, and determination of the characters as if you were living it yourself. This is a characteristic that makes the difference between a good story and an excellent story.

My only disappointment was the fact that there were several pages of unnecessary history and background.I found myself skimming through these paragraphs to get back to the plot. However, the story was enthralling enough to make up for it.

Celtic Devotions: A Guide to Morning and Evening Prayer [Hardcover] Review

Celtic Devotions: A Guide to Morning and Evening Prayer [Hardcover]I have settled into this routine: each morning, a cup of tea and a "day" from Miller's "Celtic Devotions." This ritual fills me, opens possibility, sometimes admonishes, always inspires.

A "day" from Miller's pages is arranged like this... an opening prayer or meditation, then Morning Reading, Morning Prayer, Evening Reading and Evening Prayer. I take the whole day at once, knowing myself; I rarely come back to things like this when night descends.

Miller's poetic reflections move me. Bits of Psalm 119, which provide the Morning Reading reorient me. The rhythms of Celtic life and thought and verse, oft quoted from the "Carmina Gadelica" (a collection of Gaelic songs) take me to another time then bring me home... longing, musing, praying, dreaming, hoping, resting.

So I take my tea, and I read.

Product Description:
Sunrise and sunset. Morning and evening. Waking and resting.
Your days are busy and unknown: each contains unexpected moments of joy and pain, struggle and hope. The time between your rising and sleeping is new each day.
The same was true for the Celts, though their lives looked different from yours. And in the midst of the uncertainty of days, they chose to meditate on truth, to draw near to the One who holds the sun and moon in his hands.
Calvin Miller invites you to do the same in Celtic Devotions. This thirty-day guide provides morning and evening readings and prayers to help you establish a Word-centered rhythm in your days. Centered on Psalm 119, an important psalm in Celtic praise, and including quotations from classic Celtic works, this devotional will guide your thoughts from morning to evening, helping you rest in God's truth when you're awake and when you're sleeping.

The Inward Morning: A Philosophical Exploration in Journal Form [Paperback] Review

The Inward Morning: A Philosophical Exploration in Journal Form [Paperback]Edward Mooney is owed a great debt of thanks for reprinting this lost classic from the 1960s in the tradition of Thoreau's *Walden Pond.**The Inward Morning* is a reflection on life in journal form comparable to DagHammerskold's *Markings,* but far more profound philosophically.Bugbee, aformer Harvard professor, records his own most provocative thoughts aboutthe nature of individual selfhood, our relations to others and theenvironment, how we articulate our goals and passions, our way of finding aplace in the world and a sense of attentive/responsive connection to beingin general, and so much more. It is a book not only for professionalphilosophers (who will find it full of insights in moral psychology andphilosophical anthropology), but just as much for students and laypersonsstill searching for answers to life's most profound questions. It wouldmake an excellent addition to a syllabus for a course on the Meaning ofLife, or Philosophy in the Wilderness (say along with Thoreau, Emerson), orperhaps even Deep Ecology (along with Leopold and Naess). It would alsomake a great gift for anyone with a love for a penetrating and endlesslynovel perspective on human existence.

Product Description:
When first published in 1958, The Inward Morning was ahead of its time. Boldly original, it blended East and West, nature and culture, the personal and the universal. The critical establishment, confounded, largely ignored the work. Readers, however, embraced Bugbee's lyrical philosophy of wilderness. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s this philosophical daybook enjoyed the status of an underground classic.
With this paperback reissue, The Inward Morning will be brought to the attention of a new generation. Henry Bugbee is increasingly recognized as the only truly American existentialist and an original philosopher of wilderness who is an inspiration to a growing number of contemporary philosophers.

Good Morning, Darkness [Hardcover] Review

Good Morning, Darkness [Hardcover]The fundamental theme of this novel is obsession and the price it extracts on all of the characters. The obsession takes human form in the attractive body and movements of Laura Finnegan. Everyone who comes into contact with her, even at a distance, becomes attracted to her like moths to a flame. Her boyfriend, Scott Goodsell, loves her so much he wants to marry her. A nameless Mexican fisherman changes his daily routine so that he can stand outside her home and watch her as she moves around her kitchen. Laura's boss, Mr. Johnson, wants her to the point of committing sexual harassment, something he has done and gotten away with before. Then there is Reggie Brooks, a local police detective but also her martial arts instructor. Laura Finnegan has that rare ability to inspire love and devotion in every man and all are prepared to give up everything they each have for her. Then she vanishes.

The Mexican fisherman finds an arm on a local beach and a few miles away, the matching arm washes ashore in Malibu. Since he hasn't seen Laura in days, he begins to wonder if the arms are hers. He also realizes that he hasn't seen her boyfriend, Scott Goodsell, a man he knows only by the car he drives, a white BMW. Assigned to the case of the found arms, Reggie Brooks begins to wonder as well as Laura hasn't made it to class lately. Mr. Johnson also wonders about her even though he got a letter from her stating that she was quitting her job. While there is no reason to suspect that the found arms and Laura's disappearance are in any way related, the detective and the fisherman believe, for different reasons, they are linked.

Shifting between the boyfriend Scott, to detective Brooks, to the Mexican fisherman, and others, the novel gradually reveals a tale of murder and deceit. A weak storyline of a gangland execution is introduced to provide some complexity to the work and as character development, but is not used to any real effectiveness. Additional story elements of classicism and accounting fraud are used much more effectively used and do enhance the tale, but the primary focus is obsession. Obsession in each character drives the work forward and it is only because of obsession that every single thing happens. The result is a good read that engages the reader from start to finish.

Sunshine [Paperback] Review

Sunshine [Paperback]This is a first-rate book. Won the Children's book Council Children's Picture Book of the Year Award in 1982.
Ormerod's textless illustrations of a family's early morning activities is superb. The little girl, creepsinto mum and dad's bed in the morning (the alarm closck tells us it is7.20, kisses dad, and then helps him prepare breakfast (the toast burns ashe reads the paper). They take breakfast into mum, still in bed. mum goesback to sleep, and dad gets lost in the paper. Our heroine gets herselfdressed and toileted. It's now 8.25, and a rush ensues as Mum and dad leapout of bed to get going.
Absolutely delightful. Lots of fodder forchildren's imagination, and sequencing skills - some of the pics are instrip cartoon format.
There is a sequel, moonlight, about activities atthe other end of the day, which is just as delightful.
A timelessclassic; thoroughly recommended. It was a firm bedtime favourite in ourhouse from about age 2 1/2 on.

The Great Country Inns of America Cookbook: More Than 400 Recipes from Morning Meals to Midnight Snacks, Fourth Edition (Paperback) Review

The Great Country Inns of America Cookbook: More Than 400 Recipes from Morning Meals to Midnight Snacks, Fourth EditionThe high point of this book is absolutely the flavor. The tomato pie is a sheer delight, although it was rather messy to serve when fresh (it had a tendency to fall apart). The peach cobbler certainly highlighted the best of that summer fruit. The zucchini breakfast meal is surprisingly flavorful given the short list of simple ingredients. All in all, flavor and appearance are the shining best aspects of Great Country Inns. You'll be proud to serve these recipes to your own guests, and there's no need to tell them how simple most of these recipes are---let them think you slaved over a hot stove!

Normally a lack of photos doesn't bother me, although it's a tad unusual in a book that's all about food oriented towards guests, special occasions, and so on; I don't think they're needed here in most cases because the recipes are pretty simple, but some readers might prefer them.

I did find some of the directions a bit ambiguous. For example, there's a casserole that involves "blending" a mixture of eggs and dairy with chopped & cooked potato, then baking. There's no indication whether blending means stirring or actual blending with a mixer, which would result in a very different texture and result. We decided to go with stirring and the result came out well, so I'll assume that's what the recipe meant. These ambiguities seem relatively few, however, so I wouldn't worry too much about them.

My only other negative is, like the photos, very reader- and occasion-dependent. Like most restaurant food, these recipes tend to use huge amounts of butter to improve flavor. The peach cobbler leftovers had a puddle of congealed butter in them after refrigeration---the recipe used so much that some of it separated back out again. This isn't a problem if you aren't concerned about healthy eating or bring out this cookbook only on special occasions, but I thought it deserved a mention in case it's a concern for you.

Overall this is a wonderful cookbook, well worth exploring in your kitchen. The vast range of recipes is impressive and delicious, and surprisingly easy to make.

Why Get Up in the Morning: A Guide to the Meaning of Life [Paperback] Review

Why Get Up in the Morning: A Guide to the Meaning of Life [Paperback]What do you think they'll say about you---on your gravestone? Do you care about meaning in life beyond meeting your daily needs? If you are looking to make sense of it all, Why Get Up in the Morning is a provocative book you'll want to read. Author Tom Kramlinger writes, "...the purpose of this book is to examine themes about the meaning of life and to offer some ideas about how you...can lay claim to your own personal meaning--something to live by, something to stand for."
Why Get Up in the Morning offers illumination of the path from Having to Doing to Being---a path that is lined with both secular and religious bricks. Having includes someone to love and to be loved by someone; appreciating and enjoying beauty; finding and applying fairness; and, of course, humor.
Doing relates to achievement; making a contribution; seeing life as an adventure; following time honored traditions. More, Doing is about right and courage and honor. Kramlinger asks in one of the many question and answer segments found in each chapter, "When in your life did you struggle to do the right thing?"
The realm of Being, the most spiritual of the three, is about appreciating the wonder of existence; knowing the truth; growth through enlightenment; communion and unity with others; and discerning the value of "letting go" through the pilgrimage of life.
In his superbly written book, Tom Kramlinger offers wisdom and consciousness to the reader. Each chapter ends with questions that will get you to think---and after all, isn't that the mark of a great book? In this reviewer's opinion, Why Get Up in the Morning is a book that can help add meaning to your life. It worked for me!

Product Description:
Six Mornings on Sanibel is a moving story for readers of all ages. Two unlikely men meet one morning at the fishing pier on Sanibel Island in Florida. Over the course of the next six mornings, they share more than just snook runs and cold Cokes.
Richard Evans is an over weight, stressed out divorce attorney who measures his success by how much money he can manipulate from his clients. Under duress from his wife, Helen, he has taken is estranged family on vacation to Sanibel Island. Helen, who's life has grown to revolve around her soap operas, bridge games and excessive spending, has anything but time for her family. Subsequently, both their teenage boys are spoiled beyond measure with every toy and game manufactured. Spoiled with everything except love and time from their parents. Sadly, their big, beautiful Midwestern house resembles anything but a home.
Carl Johnson and his wife, Marie, had moved to Sanibel decades ago to raise their family in the peaceful serene environment that island life has to offer; Carl as a fishing guide and Marie tending their family, garden and volunteer work. He has lived a long full life and is now old and retired. With his children having moved out of state and Marie having passed away to cancer last year, Carl is living the last years of his life with his fishing tackle and memories.
Over the next six mornings, while catching and releasing fish, Carl and Richard share tales of love, losses, heroism, vanity, suicide and life. They share bait, fishing gear and poignant conversations. With each passing morning, something happens to Richard. He begins to realize how superficial and shallow his life has become and contemplates changing, no matter how difficult that change may be.

Lark in the Morning: The Verses of the Troubadours, a Bilingual Edition [Paperback] Review

Lark in the Morning: The Verses of the Troubadours, a Bilingual Edition [Paperback]This is a wonderful introduction to the great troubadour lyric and provides a useful series of commentaries of each troubadour included in the book. The editor who did translations to complement those of Pound and Snodgrass provides a passionate and valuable survey of the 200-plus years of this lyric tradition. Most importantly, the Occitan texts - side by side with the English - are a revelation, providing the lyric power and beauty of this world-changing literary movement. It is very difficult to not come back and read over the lyrics time and again.

Product Description:
Although the troubadours flourished at the height of the Middle Ages in southern France, their songs of romantic love, with pleasing melodies and intricate stanzaic patterns, have inspired poets and song writers ever since, from Dante to Chaucer, from Renaissance sonneteers to the Romantics, and from Verlaine and Rimbaud to modern rock lyricists. Yet despite the incontrovertible influence of the troubadours on the development of both poetry and music in the West, there existed no comprehensive anthology of troubadour lyrics that respected the verse form of the originals until now.

Lark in the Morning honors the meter, word play, punning, and sound effects in the troubadours' works while celebrating the often playful, bawdy, and biting nature of the material. Here, Robert Kehew augments his own verse translations with those of two seminal twentieth-century poets-Ezra Pound and W. D. Snodgrass-to provide a collection that captures both the poetic pyrotechnics of the original verse and the astonishing variety of troubadour voices. This bilingual edition contains an introduction to the three major periods of the troubadours-their beginning, rise, and decline-as well as headnotes that briefly put each poet in context. Lark in the Morning will become an essential collection for those interested in learning about and teaching the origins of Western vernacular poetry.

Five times during the winter that followed his first visit with Mr. Van Eensselaer, he invented some excuse to visit Dawn. The first time he came, he found her in the maple grove behind the pasture, with a group of other girls, all decked in autumn leaves and playing out some story that Dawn had read.He persuaded her to walk a little way into the woods with him; and when he came to take his leave asked for a Mss, but Dawn sprang away from him in sudden panic:" No," she said sharply; " I have never kissed anybody but my mother." Then, fearing she had been impolite in view of his gift, she added:"We don't kiss people here at this school. Sid and Marty Krofft: A Critical Study of Saturday Morning Childrens Television, 19691993 (Paperback) Review

Sid and Marty Krofft: A Critical Study of Saturday Morning Childrens Television, 19691993The catalog of North Carolina publishers McFarland and Company is a veritable goldmine of works on often neglected corners of history and popular culture.Despite their no-frills design and the sometimes variablequality of the writing therein, the characteristic thoroughness, ambitionand enthusiasm of McFarland's publications typically makes them worth theirunderstandably (for a small publisher printing small editions of highlyspecialized texts) steep prices. Hal Erickson's Sid and Marty Krofft: ACritical Study of Saturday Morning Children's Television, 1969-1993 is noexception. While Erickson's subtitle rather oversteps the actual contentof the book--it is strictly limited to "Saturday Morning Children'sTelevison" Krofft style, and a truly "critical study" of theKrofft oeuvre wouldn't skip so gingerly over the relationship of "H.R.Pufnstuf" to Vietnam-era drug culture, or ignore entirely, say, thepeculiar sexual politics of "Sigmund and the Sea Monsters"(Sigmund being seduced by his brother in drag?A camp genie shacking upwith a runaway sea monster and a half-naked "nephew," bothunderage?) or the Kroffts' general subversion of the mythic Americannuclear family (aunts, babysitters, robots, even, but where are theparents?Marshall disappeared after a season of "Land of theLost," Big Daddy and Sweet Mama were just plain abusive)--it isnonetheless an invaluable source of information and insight for any Krofftfan. David Martindale's Pufnstuff and Other Stuff: The Weird and WonderfulWorld of Sid and Marty Krofft (q.v.) may be less pretentious (Ericksonhasn't quite mastered the academic pop culture studies style he attempts tomimic, and is prone to annoying Britishisms), and, certainly,better-illustrated (apparently, McFarland either couldn't or wouldn't printeven a single llustration in its offering), but Erickson's book more thancomplements it in its attention to the details, contexts, and significanceof the Wonderful World of Sid and Marty Krofft. An extra star for effort...

Product Description:
H.R. Pufnstuf, Lidsville, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Land of the Lost: For a generation of children growing up in the late sixties and early seventies, these were some of the most memorable shows on Saturday morning television. At a time when television cartoons had lost some of their luster, two puppeteers named Sid and Marty Krofft put together a series of shows that captivated children.

Using colorful sets and mysterious lands full of characters that had boundless energy, the Kroffts created a new form of children'stelevision, rooted in the medium's earliest shows but nevertheless original in its concept. This work first provides a history of the Kroffts' pretelevision career, then offers discussions of their 11 Saturday morning shows. Complete cast and credit information is enhanced by interviews with many of the actors and actresses, behind-the-scenes information, print reviews of the series, and plot listings of the individual episodes. The H.R. Pufnstuf feature film, the brothers' other television work, and their short-lived indoor theme park are also detailed.

Red Sky in the Morning: The secret history of two men who got away - and one who didn't. (Paperback) Review

Red Sky in the Morning: The secret history of two men who got away - and one who didn't.I first met the authors after reviewing Gold Warriors: America's Secret Recovery of Yamashita's Gold and then traveling to Europe to interview them--they are in self-imposed exile--for a DVD that was shown at one of my earlier international conferences.[My rendition of this review at Phi Beta Iota, the Public Intelligence Blog, has live links Amazon does not allow here.]

They are among the most serious and talented investigative journalists I know, easily ranking with John Pilger Freedom Next Time: Resisting the Empire, Robert KaplanThe Coming Anarchy: Shattering the Dreams of the Post Cold War; and my special favorite, Robert Young Pelton Robert Young Pelton's The World's Most Dangerous Places: 5th Edition (Robert YoungPelton the World's Most Dangerous Places).

This is a great read.I attended boarding school and later served as a Marine Corps infantry officer passing in and out of the Philippines; I have been inside Japanese tunnels and have a great regard for the Filipino people.Because the US has been so asidious in writing (and fabricating) the history of the Cold War, few know that the Huks were originally a loyal resistance to the Japanese occupiers--the US, despite its tolerance for out of control atrocity mongers like Landsdale, has managed to "occupy" with a softer touch, but one no less detrimental.

As a former spy--a recovering spy--for the Central Intelligence Agency I would certify that 90% of the CIA is good people trapped in a bad system with no blood on their hands. Our problem is the 10% that doesrenditions, tortures, helps train and arm those who would do genocide and atrocities (including the Israelis, who now teach us rather than learn from us).

RED SKY has no endnotes, but is based on solid evidence.[I provide others supporting references at Phi Beta Iota the Public Intelligence Blog, as live links within this review there.]I consider Gold Warriors (with its CD containing 60,000 pages of maps and supporting documentation) to be the better book, but for some readers, this book will be much more fun and memorable. Here are the highlights from this most truthful account

+Landsdale was never in combat--he spent WWII in San Francisco writing propaganda for the OSS.

+When Truman closed down the OSS (he later regretted every starting the CIA) OSS people were scattered around to hide them, Lansdale was sent to Manile to work a desk for Army G-2.

+Landsdale's bright shining moment came when he recognized the value of a captured driver (Major Kojima Kashi) to General Yamashita, and bribed him to reveal treasure locations. That treasure became the basis for the USA's covert post-war Black Eagle and Golden Lily slush funds used to restore Nazis in Germany and fascists in Italy and Japan, and to do those things Congress would never agree to pay for.

+Santa Romana, a Vatican agent and member of Opus Dei, was Landsdale's co-conspirator (fast forward to the Opus Dei penetration of the US Government today, every bit as good as the Mossad's sayonim and the Mormon network).

+Landsdale--the model for the book The Ugly American and also featured in Edward Lansdale's Cold War (Culture, Politics, and the Cold War)--became a "big shot" in OSS-CIA circles because of this success at finding and secretly harvesting the Japanese thefts from China and all across Asia that were hidden in the Philippines when US dominance of the seas prevented onward passage to Japan.

+Landsale--whom all the books I've seen describe as an opportunist and con artist at heart--saw that anti-communism was the wave of the future in Washington circles (even then CIA was busy importing 100 Nazis a year), and he came up with the idea of demonizing the Huk's, who were freedom fighters, as part of the "Communist Menace."

+The book also covers the Chinese diaspora that the US Government has never understood and never taken seriously. The Chinese "High Cabal" is easily as powerful as the European "High Cabal," they just work more discreetly and make better use of local fronts.

+Landsdale needed to invent evidence of Russian support for the Huks, so he focused on Russian exiles living in Manila or enroute through the Philippines to other locations including the US.

+The heart of the story is how Landsale personally destroyed one innocent person and their family, ultimately making the person disappear after five years of surveillance, prison, and torture were brought to an end by a crusading attorney. Some sources have suggested that Landsdale ordered the murder of his trumped up Russian spy, who is believed to have been thrown from a helicopter into the South China Sea.

+The book ends with Landsdale being rewarded by being sent to Viet-Nam to support Diem (a Catholic mandarin hated by the Buddhists, with a sister that makes Idi Amin look like a wimp) and I have seen other reports that suggest that Landsdale led an effort to plant bombs in the 1950's and early 1960's to achieve the US end of creating a local civil war that would demand US intervention.

There is also a happy ending, despite all the ills that befall the patsy, the source of much of the information in this book escapes and lived happily every after.

I still believe in America the Beautiful and the righteousness of The Average American: The Extraordinary Search for the Nation's Most Ordinary Citizen but I am disgusted and alienated by all that has been done "in our name" over the years, ultimately impoverishing the many to benefit the few.I earnestly believe that the public is a populist power that cannot be suppressed, and that information and communications technologies have changed the balance of power to favor the possibility of creating a prosperous world at peace.

This book is one of the many nails in the coffin of Cold War "irrational exhuberance" that has clearly been repeated in the failure to keep capitalism moral and the failure to keep government honest at home and abroad. We can do better.

If Morning Ever Comes: A Novel [Paperback] Review

If Morning Ever Comes: A Novel [Paperback]It is hard to believe that Anne Tyler wrote this book, her first, when she was only 22 years old. To have such perception, such vision, such maturity, and such knowledge of the intricacies of family life is something I would expect of a writer twice that age.
This is also, I believe, her only novel set in the south, where Tyler was brought up. In a rare interview, she has said that she considers herself a Southerner. She certainly paints a good picture of a typical extended southern family! And this family has all the quirks and curious behaviors that have become Tyler's hallmark over the years.
Poor BenJoe...he is so confused, having taken the path of least resistance by going to law school in New York City, a totally foreign element to this small-town boy. He uses the slightest excuse to rush back home where he gets into everyone's business in a few short days, even though the houseful of women (mother, grandmother, five sisters, and a niece) clearly was doing just fine without him. Tyler makes us like him. She writes from his point of view and gets it letter-perfect.
This book is about much more than a small-town extended southern family - it is about birth and death, living and dying, and the unbreakable bonds of family.

Morning Calm: A Novel of the Korean War (Paperback) Review

Morning Calm: A Novel of the Korean WarThis is as fine a story about Marines in combat as I have ever read.It is the story of a Marine scout platoon: from peacetime in California, to the landing at Inchon, to the recapture of Seoul, to the drive for the Yalu River, to the Chinese human wave attacks near the Chosin Reservoir. With the good character development you'll get to know all the main characters very well:Captain Cussler (the men mockingly call him Custer behind his back), Sgt. Reese (the quiet one who landed on Iwo Jima and knows what lies ahead), Stooch (a corporal whose courage is beyond description), the Professor (who spends all his free time reading old classics), Moore (the platoon bigot and one hell of a BAR man - he refused to take any more prisoners after Seoul), Goldman (the platoon Jew and bazooka man), Sullivan (the Mick and .50 caliber MG man), Doc Lowe (medic), Ramirez (the Hispanic and radio operator) and "Tank" Brewster (he takes out two Russian T-34s all by himself.)
The dialogue and banter between the members of the platoon is incredibly well done and adds much to the realism of the storyline. It brings the haunting Korean War Memorial in DC to life. Don't pass this one up.Get it and read it.

One Arabian Morning [Paperback] Review

One Arabian Morning [Paperback]This book is a delight for young and old alike. I suggest you buy the hardback edition, because it's a book you will want to keep over the generations. Your grandchildren will thank you for it just as much as your children did. Pete Marlowe has a poet's gift for words, so much so that the illustrations--although admittedly charming and thoughtful--aren't strictly necessary to this eloquently told tale that combines a simplicity of spirit with a great warmth of heart.

Product Description:
Following Pete Marlowe's magical first story book, "The Trailer Park Princesses,"he returns with another enchanting tale as we join Katelyn on a wild and exciting ride through the imagination and back again! All the classic Arabian folk-tale elements tumble about as Katelyn saves the day -- and the teapot.
Katelyn intends to wake up early one morning to make breakfast for her parents. Her dad has ordered cereal and her mother a big pot of tea. Katelyn sets her very own alarm clock to be sure she is up on time.
When the clock goes off the next morning, Katelyn begins her fanciful journey into an Arabia of her imagination. Once there, she must save the king's greatest treasure from being stolen by a man with a cackle (never a good sign), claiming to be the Grand Vizier of all the kingdom -- and holding Katelyn's mom's teapot!
Katelyn must combat many enchantments, but with a little cunning, she manages to trick the Vizier into a magical chest and she locks it tightly. Then Katelyn is off on her flying carpet-sized handkerchief. She whisks the teapot home just in time to make a great big pot for Mom and Dad's breakfast in bed.
Charles Bell's richly detailed and boldly colored illustrations perfectly capture this bewitching tale.

Good Morning, Mr. Zip Zip Zip: Movies, Memory and World War II (Hardcover) Review

Good Morning, Mr. Zip Zip Zip: Movies, Memory and World War IIRichard Schickel's memoir of life and movies during WWII, is a book that not "only a film scholar could write", but one that only THIS film scholar could write. To those of us of, as they say, a certain age, it offers a fascinating re-evaluation of the films of WWII, as well as a compelling portratit of growing up in America at the time. Indeed, if the book has a flaw for those of us old enough to remember the films in their original release, it is the lack of precise dates of release of many of them. HOWEVER, one does have to ask (and my rating of 4, rather than 5, stars offers my answer), who, besides me, Schickel, and our co-age group, is the book for? While his insights into all the films he cites are meticulous, the vast majority of them are not only obscure to most film goers, but DESERVEDLY so.
The writing is, as one would expect, always compelling; the portrait of America, film, and the intertwining of the two to an impressionable public, is flawless. Indeed, the subject not only should have been covered, but needed to be. But, will the average film buff, let alone the average reader, be as enthralled as I was? Alas, I tend to doubt it, but I'm grateful it was done, anyway.

Mourning to Morning [Paperback] Review

Mourning to Morning [Paperback]This book is great. It really helps see the grief process in a whole new perspective.I would reccomend this book to anyone grieving.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Mourning to Morning [Paperback]

Product Description:
Grief is a natural part of the human experience that in one way or another eventually touches every life. It is impossible to make it to the end of one's life without knowing the pain that comes from loss, whether it is the loss of a loved one to death, the loss of a relationship to breakup, or the loss of hope to despair. People die, jobs are eliminated, disasters ravage the earth, and relationships fall apart, yet the world continues spinning on its axis and life marches on.
The problem is that after a significant loss, we often do not feel that we have the energy or the will to continue. We are filled with questions that often paralyze us, fill us with doubts, and do little to relieve our pain. We struggle to understand why it is that death interrupts life, why disease invades health, and why sorrow intrudes upon happiness. People of faith have struggled for centuries to understand why bad things happen to good people. In fact, it is the subject of the oldest book of the Bible, the Book of Job.
The words of this small book were not born in abstract theory, but in the midst of a community of hope. These are sermons preached at the Cathedral of Hope. This book offers the hope of healing by pointing to the grace and love of God, which overcomes grief, even when we feel that our world is falling apart or that we have reached the end of all that we can handle. Mourning to Morning is designed to be read either from cover to cover or by choosing the chapters that seem to speak to your situation. Regardless of how you approach the pages that follow, may you discover within them the gift of grace that is sufficient for your every need.

Red Sky In the Morning: The Battle of the Barents Sea 1942 [Paperback] Review

Red Sky In the Morning: The Battle of the Barents Sea 1942 [Paperback]This book describes an account of one of the most important sea battles in the early part of the WW2 after the "phoney war" was finally over. It came to be known as The Battle of the Barents Sea and involves the actions of a small close escort of five RN destroyers to convoy JW51B plus a reserve force of two light cruisers which shadowed the convoy from a distance of some 70 miles.

Against them was the far more superior force of Germany's Heavy Cruiser Hipper, the pocket Battleship Lutzow and six destroyers. The action commenced with the British destroyer Achates being fired on by the Hipper followed by salvos from the Lutzow and several destroyers. Capt. Sherbrooke (in charge of the Destroyers) immediately turned his small force against the raiders and a sharp action followed in the semi-darkness of the Arctic Circle amid failing light and frequent snow squalls. The Achates was hit early in the action, and finally turned over and sank. Meanwhile, the action continued driving off determined attacks by the enemy. After 2 hours the British Light Cruisers arrived and the German destroyer Friedrich Eckoldt was sunk. Once the Hipper was hit and badly damaged, the German force broke off and retired. The convoy reached its destination without loss or damage to a single ship. Capt Sherbrooke was later awarded the Victoria Cross.

This was a battle which had far-reaching consequences for the German Navy. Grand Admiral Ercih Raeder resigned as Commander-in Chief, a post he had held since 1928, and Hitler issued an edict which would effectively decommission almost all of Germany's big ships.

Clearly a work which has been thoroughly and carefully researched. The end result is a fine work and well worth all that effort.

Convoy JW51B sailed in December 1942 with a small close escort of five destroyers, plus a reserve of two light cruisers, which shadowed the main convoy at a distance of seventy miles. The convoy was attacked on 31 December by a powerful German force that included the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper, the pocket battleship Lutzow and six destroyers. The ensuing engagement proved the worth of the British destroyers and the bravery of the men who sailed in them.

It was a naval engagement that had far-reaching consequences and resulted in many capital ships of the Kriegsmarine being decommissioned for the rest of World War II.

A gripping tale of the war at sea under the direst of conditions.
