The Laptop Lunch User's Guide: Fresh Ideas for Making Wholesome, Earth-friendly Lunches Your Kids Will Love [Paperback]This is the user manual that you get when you buy a Laptop Lunch system.(which i own, and which works very well for packing a typical American's lunch.)

It is about two thirds lessons on resources, recycling, and how much Americans throw away, and one third information about nutrition and packing lunch. If you are already aware of the need to reduce our dependence on plastic wraps, school lunches, high sodium tasteless preserved food, etc. then you wont find anything new here.

there are only a few recipes in this book, and if you are looking for lunch recipes you would be better served by buying a true recipe book. One thing you MAY wish to get this book for would be a school report. This book has a LOT of information that a child (or PTA member) could use in discussing school nutrition, reducing wasteand related topics.

The Korean of the Morning: Classic Recipes from the Land of the Morning Calm (Paperback) Review

The Korean of the Morning: Classic Recipes from the Land of the Morning CalmOkay, since so many have been so critical.I felt that I had to write. This is the largest and most complete Korean cookbook written in English so far. There are other cookbooks, with pictures in English but they usually only cover a few recipes. This one covers a lot.I was quite surprised. When I looked at some of the recipes, I originally thought that it was too simple or that it was lacking. But as many Native Koreans realize there is a lot of minor variations in the ingredients that people use anyway.I tried many of the recipes in the book and found them to be quite good and pretty authentic. In Korean cooking, you have to taste as you go along. This book has a good underlying taste that it is trying to create.Overall, this is a stable cookbook for those Korean Americans who want to have a ready resource to help one get started on learning to cook.(Without asking your mom =)Remember, if you really want it to turn out right, ask someone Korean and whose cooking you like, what ingredients they used and in what proportion since everyone improvises a little or adds things that make it right for their taste, usually adding more sugar, salt, garlic, and or vinegar.Good luck!

Quickies: Morning, Noon and Night [Paperback] Review

Quickies: Morning, Noon and Night [Paperback]Okay, I just wrote a review for this book, and it is not showing up here. Hence this is my second attempt.

I bought this book for my mother who admittedly needs all the help in the kitchen that she can get. First, Amazon had the book delivered quickly (within 2 days). Second, my mothers first word about the actual book itself was 'beautiful'. She also has actually been using the book, which makes me feel it is a good cookbook for those who need creative yet quick, healthful food at home. A great gift!

Mornings with Mailer: A Recollection of Friendship [Paperback] Review

Mornings with Mailer: A Recollection of Friendship [Paperback]The story is touching and honest. The depiction of Provincetown is spot on without being trite. Having grown up on Cape Cod I often see stories set on the sandbar that play too much into the quintessential view of the iconic summer playground and as a result lose the essence of the experience of really being there. This was not the case in Mornings With Mailer. I was most impressed by the way Raymond crafted the story of a young man who lost his father in his early childhood befriending an elderly man in his final years. The raw truth on Raymonds part of woe that preceded the friendship, the drinking and "lost years" provided a backdrop to the fertile ground on which the friendship grew. Following Raymonds process of healing in which he and Mailer developed a companionship that at once filled the father void and gave focus to Raymond after an extended period of searching, provided an interesting view of what it is to be male in a culture that too often sees our boys growing up without a strong male role model in their life. Adding to this poignant tale the fact that the octogenarian is the iconic Pulitzer Prize winning Norman Mailer. The book allows those of us who knew the legend to sneak a peek into the reality that was Norman Mailer. A pleasurable read. I would highly recommend it!
