Morning Of The Rising Sun: The Heroic Story of the Battles For Guadalcanal (Paperback) Review

Morning Of The Rising Sun: The Heroic Story of the Battles For GuadalcanalHaving had a strong interest in the Guadalcanal Campaign since I read "Guadalcanal Diary" when I was in high school I couldn't resist buying Dr.Friedman's book as soon as it came out.I enjoyed the book and found it to be informative especially with the charts and maps that he supplied. He has laid it out in a fashion that shows how the naval and air battles tied in with the ground campaign. It looks like his main interest is in the naval battles as they showed the most detail. If he has a weakness it was in the air battles and being a 'junior birdman' myself(PPL) and having a close relative that flew SBD's from Guadalcanal I probably am more sensitive to this than most readers.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Solomons Campaign.I only gave it a four star review due to some editing and binding problems.

Product Description:
When it comes to the Pacific theater of the Second World War, Morning of the Rising Sun: The Heroic Story of the Struggle for Guadalcanal by author and historian Kenneth I. Friedman, Ph.D. is the quintessential guide to the epic and stirring tale of the six-month conflict between the United States and the Japanese Empire over the vital island of Guadalcanal. Located in the Southern Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal was in the direct path of the primary supply line between the continental United States and Australia-New Zealand; whoever possessed the island would control the direction of the war in the Pacific. Meticulously researched, the author uses a bipartisan approach to convey the great dedication and bravery of both the Allied and Japanese fighting men. His attention to detail provides an embracing journey through a series of the most ferocious land, air, and sea battles in the history of war.

A Tidewater Morning (Paperback) Review

A Tidewater MorningStyron revisits old themes in this collection subtitled "Three Tales from Youth" and set, two thirds of the way, in Tidewater Virginia in the earlier part of the twentieth century. In it we see three episodesfrom the life of Styron's autobiographical protagonist Paul Whitehurst atages twenty, ten, and thirteen.
In "Love Day" Paul, a youngMarine lieutenant, experiences intense homesickness in the Pacific Oceanduring the waning months of WWII.This is well-written but perhaps theleast impressive of the three tales.Next is best."Shadrach"is a wonderfully affecting, funny, and touching story of a 99-year oldformer slave who walks all the way from Clay County, Alabama, to Virginiato die and be buried in his homeplace. The title story shows Paul'sstruggle to accept his mother's approaching death from cancer and paysespecial attention to the complex relationship between hisparents.
Despite Styron's wonderfully indulgent and rococo style, thesestories make for fairly quick reads, as we are carried along on a stream oftelling detail and crystalline reminiscence. Not that the work lackscomplication. As with his larger-canvased works, Styron deals with issuesof race, Southern identity, heterosexual love, courage, cowardice, religion, and art. Here and there the stories are marred by facile liberalpieties and stilted dialogue, but for the most part it is a pleasure towatch this old master cast perhaps one last look at the familiar butstill-fertile landscape of his heart and imagination.

A Morning for Flamingos (Mass Market Paperback) Review

A Morning for FlamingosI had just about given up on James Lee Burke. After being stunned with the genius of"Neon Rain," I found most contemporary Dave Robicheaux novels rather gloomy and over-described affairs.Went back to "Black Cherry Blues" his Edgar-winning novel and was disappointed. Now, I feel I've read another gem.I am doubly pleased because from reading and seeing interviews, I think James Lee Burke is one of the most charming authors around.
"A Morning for Flamingos" begins with the death of Dave's partner while transporting two prisoners, Te Beau, a New Iberia boy to whom Dave has certain obligations, and the menacing Jamie Lee Boggs.Dave is left critically wounded and remembers little of the actual escape. The story leads to underworld figures, voodoo, and the sordid, steamy underside of New Orleans.
The pace and brooding menace never let up, and Burke allows no loose ends to annoy the reader. The characterizations are sharp, descriptive, and unforgettable. The solution is elegant and exciting.I liked Dave all over again.

The Tapir's Morning Bath: Solving the Mysteries of the Tropical Rain Forest [Paperback] Review

The Tapir's Morning Bath: Solving the Mysteries of the Tropical Rain Forest [Paperback]In a lake in Panama sits a six square mile island, Barro Colorado, and there are permanent research and living facilities there which have made the island one of the best-studied patches of rainforest in the world.A wonderful book, _The Tapir's Morning Bath: Mysteries of the Tropical Rain Forest and the Scientists Who Are Trying to Solve Them_ (Houghton Mifflin) memorably shows what the scientists are up to.Elizabeth Royte is a journalist, not a naturalist, but she was not just taking notes but taking part. She ingratiated herself into the society of strange eggheads who loved fieldwork by simply making herself available as an extra pair of untrained but willing hands.Because of this we get to follow her on all sorts of recondite forays to coax the jungle to give up its secrets. She follows spider monkeys in order to catch their feces, which she bags so that they can be analyzed for hormones. She climbs out branches to hang insect traps, and counts ants. She drives a Boston whaler zooming around the lake so that a biologist perilously hanging off the front can net migrating moths, and she learns to sex the moths by squeezing their thoraces. She triangulates to find out where bats fly around in the dark. She climbs trees to help monitor the behavior of creeping vines that modify the forest. At one point, a newcomer naturalist comes into Royte's room, mistakenly thinking she has found a fellow naturalist: "Oh, hi.Hi.Do you happen to have a syringe smaller than 1 cc?I'm trying to inject some solution into a butterfly's ear canal and what I have is way too big."Royte is excited about all these tasks, and her enthusiasm is on every page of her book.In addition, she has humorous descriptions of the men and women working on the island, but playing as well, with Ultimate Frisbee one of the least controversial amusements. But it is their work that makes the book. One of them explains that if he were intent on conservation, he'd be doing other work to promote it directly, and that he is attempting something like pure thought: "I'm setting up this experiment as an exercise in thinking. I don't want a utilitarian reason for everything. Why do we need art? I feel the same way about basic science: It's good for us."
Reading Royte's book is good for us, too. There is a wide array of scientific information presented here, and plenty of good humor, raconteurship, and insight into how science is done and what makes scientists do it.It is also a deeply personal document, as during the year Royte married (to someone back in the States), became pregnant, and found that her reflections on nature and on evolution were deepened by the embryo growing with her. This is a surprisingly moving book about scientific endeavor and the solving of puzzles within and puzzles without.

Daily Light on the Daily Path: The Classic Devotional Book For Every Morning and Evening in the Very Words of Scripture [Hardcover] Review

Daily Light on the Daily Path: The Classic Devotional Book For Every Morning and Evening in the Very Words of Scripture [Hardcover]Daily Light on the Daily Path has served for centuries as a wonderful, uplifting morning and evening devotional. In the 1800s, Samuel Bagster would lead his family in morning and evening devotions (something all too lacking in most contemporary households) by compiling scripture references along central themes. His son Jonathan, remembering the power of his father's devotions, published the compiled verses years later as Daily Light on the Daily Path. Originally in the King James Version, Crossway has now published an edition using the English Standard Version, whose accuracy and literary beauty do justice to the original, and whose readability brings the 19th century classic into the 21st century.

I was initially highly skeptical about using this work as a means of daily devotion. I have never been one in favor of taking verses out of their immediate context. However, Bagster's work is a marvel. It is an inspirational work that carefully compiles the selections so that they are harmonized, yet their original intent is not lost. He made sure, as a good father should, to not twist the scriptures to his own meaning, but represent them to his family as they were meant to be read all along.

In some ways, it is not unlike using your bible's cross-reference system as a means of daily reading. The carefully selected verses around central themes are an enrichment, letting Scripture speak to Scripture. I have found this book to be just the start I need in the morning to begin my day in a mode of worship, as well as an equally positive reflection after a day of joy or toil. Now incorporating the ESV (my personal favorite for devotion, study, teaching, and preaching), Daily Light continues to serve the Christian in the beginning and end of his or her day in the Lord. This ranks alongside Charles H. Spurgeon's Morning and Evening and John Piper's Taste and See in my favorite devotional books, but Daily Light will always have a particularly special place for being exclusively and beautifully rendered in Scripture itself.

Read Daily Light online at http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/devotions/daily.light/.As a child Samuel Bagster learned the precepts and practices ofa devoted Christian, which sustained him throughout his life andwhich, in turn, he passed on to his children. This highlyprincipled and religiously minded bookshop owner gathered his largefamily together daily for reading God's Word, testing theirknowledge by connecting the day's verses with other passages, andpraying over how it could be applied. It was from this practice ofworship that the Bagster family compiled the material for DailyLight on the Daily Path.It is said that this daily devotional book is the most popularof all time. It has touched hundreds of thousands of Christians tothe remotest corners of the world with the biblical message ofcomfort and help. Originally printed in the 1800s, this work istimeless because each reading is a connection of Scripture versescentered around a theme. Crossway is delighted to re-release thisclassic book in the beautiful and clear language of the EnglishStandard Version.
