Fit in 15: 15-Minute Morning Workouts that Balance Cardio, Strength, and Flexibility (Paperback) Review

Fit in 15: 15-Minute Morning Workouts that Balance Cardio, Strength, and FlexibilityI am a working mother of two preschoolers, and I was gaining weight because I could no longer manage to fit my 1 1/2 hour gym workouts into my schedule. I bought a treadmill a few months ago (with a lot of help from treadmilldoctor.com) and I still couldn't fit in the 45 minutes I felt I needed to use it - maybe 3 or 4 times aweek - to replicate at least part of my gym workouts of yesteryear.

I will admit what appealed to me about this book is the 15 minute concept. Yes, I'm busy, but can I spare 15 minutes? I must be able to. Plus, the book doesn't give me that cop-out of "I'm too tired this morning. I'll do this after work," which then never happens. The 15 minutes are in the morning, and 15 minutes is not really all that much earlier to get up, so psychologically, I can handle it without too many excuses.

After using this plan, I have found the following:
1) I am able to stick to it
2) I am more energetic during the day after a morning workout
3) I'm seeing my body come back

As a bonus, I find I'm often motivated to go a little longer on the cardio in because, really, the first 15 minutes are the hardest. If I tell myself I'm just getting on the treadmill for 15 minutes, it's not as hard as telling myself I need to go 45 minutes or not at all. Too often I would choose not at all.

All the equipment you really need are dumbbells. A yoga mat and an exercise ball are highly recommended. For cardio, you can use the sidewalk. :)

I highly recommend this book.

Morning Yoga Workouts (Morning Workout Series) [Paperback] Review

Morning Yoga Workouts [Paperback]This will be a very useful book for me and for many others. The first two chapters provide a very succinct overview of the fundamentals and a detailed guide to good habits. My yoga library is fairly extensive and these two chapters provide more foundational guidance on more aspects in fewer pages than any book I can recall.Of course my short-term memory is not what it used to be!But even if there are other yoga books with this much guidance in such a short read, providing it in a book primarily aimed at the fitness market is fabulous, and you will find it to be clear and useful.

That the breath is fundamental to my experience of yoga is without question. That a morning practice (adapted to my time and ability) is not to be missed is also without question. These are now part of my enjoyment of life.

I should disclose that I have studied with Zack for nearly five years, so I am pre-disposed to write a positive review.I have also studied with Leslie Kaminoff, Mark Whitwell, Kausthub Desikachar, and T.K.V. Desikachar; and have read all their books and many others. And am currently enrolled in Gary and Mirka Kraftsow's teacher training program.I have read lots of yoga books.

Showing asana practice routines of three intensities and three time lengths is very useful. It addresses the principal obstacles to getting a home practice started - ability and time.Of course these two obstacles are issues of perception, but who knows that until we start to break the obstacles down.I bet this book will help more than a few people break them down!Thank goodness that in fact we all have all the time and ability we need, and that there are books like this and people like Zack, that are helping others to experience this truism.Life is good!

8 Minutes in the Morning: A Simple Way to Shed Up to 2 Pounds a Week -- Guaranteed [Paperback] Review

8 Minutes in the Morning: A Simple Way to Shed Up to 2 Pounds a Week -- Guaranteed [Paperback]Jorge Cruise has developed a quick way to "jump-start" your morning. By performing only 8 minutes of strength training and following a simple diet Jorge says you can shape up! In fact on the cover of his book he guarantees weight loss in just 4 weeks.
I think the strength training aspect of his program is very good. The photographs are clear and the descriptions for the exercises are concise. Jorge leads you through 4 sets of 12 repetitions for 2 exercises, alternating them for greater effect.
There are a number of exercises including standing heel raises, kickups, knee pushups, and one arm curls.
Despite the short time period, I could feel a nice difference in my body in under a week. Though its easy to not exercise, its hard to make excuses when it's only 8 minutes! Great Concept!
It would be nice if Jorge had included modifications for those who had difficulty performing the exercises.
Jorge also includes a motivational thought for the day. Each day has a different idea to hopefully "kick" you into high gear. Ideas such as visualization, using light, rewards etc. Nothing new, but a nice addition to the book.
The diet is your standard low calorie type fare, with one addition. Jorge has you add one tsp. of flax oil (which you can also purchase from him) or olive oil to your meals to give you that feeling of satiation. I purchased Jorge's flax oil and indeed it does make you feel full..but I found the taste was very hard to get used to. Overall, I was disappointed in the diet. Jorge does not use the new information about how glycemic levels can be effected by certain foods and he suggests foods that easily turn to sugar in your body like bananas. He also suggests eating treats alone and that could trigger cravings in some folks if not paired with a protein.
Jorge says he has trained over 3 million people online in his book. So I was surprised when I visited his website that it seemed like it was still in it's infancy ie chat board just starting etc. I have been on a variety of fitness websites for over 5 years and have never heard of Jorge. I was also disappointed when he suggested on the board the if we needed motivation we buy a small outfit and try to diet to get in it.
Personally, I think we all need to feel good NOW about our bodies and try to make them better by buying clothes that fit and adjusting down when the time is right.
My thoughts are that he knows his exercise but put together a diet program by gathering information from others. I don't think his diet program is anything special or the answer folks have been looking for.
But the book is worth the price for the exercises alone. And Jorge is young and enthusiastic and his knowledge of nutrition will grow! Hopefully his next book will include the wonderful exercises and a better nutrition plan.
