Magic Tree House Research Guide #3: Mummies and Pyramids: A Nonfiction Companion to Mummies in the Morning (A Stepping Stone Book(TM)) (Library Binding) Review

Magic Tree House Research Guide #3: Mummies and Pyramids: A Nonfiction Companion to Mummies in the Morning)This is a very good book for children. It contains a lot of great information about Ancient Egypt.I read another review by a reader who was offended by the thought that the Pyramids weren't built by slaves. This was obviously a surprise to him but I had heard it elsewhere so it was no news to me.There were slaves in Egypt and I'm sure they were badly used in other jobs. They could have also been used to help build the pyramids, I doubt we will ever know exactly. This is a good book and no reader should pass it up over one shocked review. There's plenty of good information here and it is very interesting.

I'll See You in the Morning [Board book] Review

I'll See You in the Morning [Board book]I have a slightly different version of this book - it has a picture of a little boy hugging the moon instead of the boy and his mother on the cover. It is a sweet bedtime ritual, with just the right amount of text on each page in a flowing rhyme style that children will soon learn off by heart. I would recommend this book for children 2 - 6 years of age, especially children with fears of the dark or monsters or of just being alone at bedtime. I was very impressed with the cover of this book, there is no dust jacket to get torn and neither is it made of cardboard that would soon get creased with use. The poem ends with the promise of "...and I'll see you in the morning".

Magic Tree House Boxed Set, Books 1-4: Dinosaurs Before Dark, The Knight at Dawn, Mummies in the Morning, and Pirates Past Noon [Box set] (Paperback) Review

Magic Tree House Boxed Set, Books 1-4: Dinosaurs Before Dark, The Knight at Dawn, Mummies in the Morning, and Pirates Past Noon [Box set]When My son was younger these were among his most favorite books. He made sure we saved these so he could pass them on to his little brother to read to him once he is old enough. These are simple chapter books. They range in page count from about 68 to 96 pages I believe so they are relatively quick reads that can be read in a few nights depending upon your child's reading level. This set contains the first four books in the series:

Book #1, DINOSAURS BEFORE DARK

Book #2, THE KNIGHT AT DAWN

Book #3, MUMMIES IN THE MORNING

Book #4, PIRATES PAST NOON

The First, Dinosaurs Before Dawn tells the story of how jack and Annie (the series stars) first find the Magic Tree House and learn how the books can transport them to magical lands and worlds. The first takes them to the Cretaceous period. Through clues and reading the book in hand they learn and discover things about dinosaurs.

In the "Knight at Dawn", jack and Annie are transported back to medieval times. They find a castle and go exploring and find themselves on the run from the castle guards and worry they will never get back to the magic tree house.

"mummies In the Morning" Jack has always been fascinated by and pick up a book that has them traveling back to ancient Egypt.Jack and Annie enter a pyramid and get lost inside.Inside they find the ghost of an Egyptian queen whose been trapped inside the pyramid for ages and Jack and Annie try to set her free.

"Pirates Past Noon"Jack and Annie picture a wonderful beach and are transported to the times of Pirates where they are capture by Captain Bones who is seeking the treasure of Captain Kidd.

These books are geared for kids from the 2nd to the 5th grade I would say. They are entertaining, imaginative reads that help teach kids about history while being fun to read as well. Some have commented that the writing, technically speaking is weak. That may be in some spots but I feel this is mostly intentional as they are writing for 6 - 10 year olds.

These books are really a joy to read and I loved reading them along with my son.I'm glad we saved them!

Good Morning Comrades (Paperback) Review

Good Morning ComradesI have just finished reading the absolutely delightful, humorous and sweet:book, Bom Dia Camaradas [Good Morning Comrades] by Angolan author Ondjaki. This is not his first book, but it is the first of his books to come across my table. And what a gratifying surprise!

This is a book of a young man's memories of his teens. Actually is just the memories of a couple of months of his school days. They happen to be also the last days of the Angolan war, which here is seen within the context by his family's routine and the normal adventures of a young teenager's school days. He and his family are well placed in the middle class. And what we learn is how the middle class coped with the war, as well as their hopes for the future.

The story is framed by the arrival and departure of his aunt, who living in Portugal, spends several weeks visiting her family in Luanda. This visit gives Ondjaki a great way of describing Luanda, Angola and people's habits through the eyes and questions not only of the outsider, but through the constant surprise our young man feels when he compares her answers with what he knows to be "real life," that is, life as lived by those in Luanda. These interchanges between nephew and aunt are often humorous and occasionally hilarious, for we are able to see from both sides the amazement and disbelief at how the others live.

Ondjaki is also very skilled in representing the "nothing"-talk of young teens, who are constantly improving on reality not to miss a good tale. He was also very succinct and deft at demonstrating how in a period of crisis, any tale can be believable, and can make people act in the most extreme ways. All of this Ondjaki does while keeping a light tone, a colloquial dialogue in a smart teenager' mouth.

The book is a fast read. It's short, only 146 pages. But it's so charming I wanted to know more and more, I wanted to continue to follow this family's activities. It also has all the characteristics of a book that will become a classic for young readers, anywhere in the world.

For those of us who read it in Portuguese and are not from Angola, there is an extra prize: a wonderful discovery of a language that has acquired an African vocabulary that sings in the ears of Portuguese and certainly Brazilian readers. There is a glossary at the end of the book, but I did not find the need to consult it. I preferred to let the words establish their meaning for themselves.

This is a book I recommend. Pleasant reading and lots of information on Angola.
I will recommend this to my book club. It is that good!

Good Morning, Chick [Paperback] Review

Good Morning, Chick [Paperback]How many times I read this book to my children! The very youngest child can understand the story line and appreciate the repetetive text (which you can edit easily for your own sanity, if necessary). We are introduced to the little chick, his mother, and his home. Danger enters the chick's world in the form of a black, hissing cat, but Mom shields the chick with her big brown wing, and clucks the cat out of the picture. The chick meets a big frog and even falls into the pond and gets wet -- which little children think is terrifically funny. The bright, colorful pictures appeal to the very young and are easy on the adult eye.It doesn't sound like much, but it ends up being a very rich, warm experience to share this book with a little one.My 13 year old saw it today, and went through it with a bg grin on his face; which is why I checked to see if it was still in print. Thankfully, you can enjoy it with children you love, too.

St. Patrick's Day in the Morning (Clarion books) (Paperback) Review

St. Patrick's Day in the MorningYoung Jamie wakes early on St. Patrick's Day, much earlier than his sleeping family. He remembers that there will be a parade to the top of Acorn Hill today, and then he remembers that his brothers say he's too little to march in the parade.
Well, fine then! He'll just have a parade of his own!!Jamie sets off in his green sweater, hat and coat with Nell the dog and march up the center of town to Acorn Hill by themselves.Along the way, the meet some of the other villagers, one of whom gives Jamie an Irish flag that he proudly waves in his own parade.Does he make it to the top??You'll have to read to find out!!
"St. Patrick's Day in the Morning" is a beautiful story for any child who has ever been told that they're too small, too weak, too short, too this, too that, to do something. You can see Jamie's' happiness at proving everyone wrong. The pen and ink illustrations are lush and detailed:you could count the shingles in the roofs or the bricks in the walls.Green and a little yellow are the only colors in the book, emphasizing the spirit and colors of St. Pats in Jamie's sweater, the flag of Ireland and, of course, the lush green grasses of the Emerald Isle.
Because it's not a book about the history or legend of St. Patrick, there is no reason to limit it's reading only to March 17th.Teachers would find it a useful book in teaching both about Ireland and, of course, proving that smaller doesn't mean incapable.A fine book by Bunting and Brett, and highly recommended.

Mummies in the Morning (Magic Tree House, No. 3) [Paperback] Review

Mummies in the Morning [Paperback]We've loved every other one of the Magic Tree House series, but this one (although interesting to me, the parent) was a bit too scary for my six year old son.We only read half way through it and that was it for him(the mummies were too much for him -- yet he didn't mind the ghost in theWild West book). So parents, be prepared for this one if your child isyoung or a bit sensitive.
