This is a very good book for children.It contains a lot of great information about Ancient Egypt.I read another review by a reader who was offended by the thought that the Pyramids weren't built by slaves.This was obviously a surprise to him but I had heard it elsewhere so it was no news to me.There were slaves in Egypt and I'm sure they were badly used in other jobs.They could have also been used to help build the pyramids, I doubt we will ever know exactly.This is a good book and no reader should pass it up over one shocked review.There's plenty of good information here and it is very interesting.

Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush PB w CD (Sing Along With Fred Penner) (Paperback) Review

My two and four year olds love this book and CD and make me read/sing it with them over and over. We are a biracial family and I appreciated the way that the book presented four different cultures. The family from Africa were presented as living a simple life, but I did not read poverty or unhappiness into the story.

Paperboy (Paperback) Review

When you are sleeping & the sky is dark & the streets shadowy, someone & his dog are up, working & happy.
Happy are they at work before dawn, the dog running after scents & growling at critters & the boy pedaling his bike, thinking his thoughts & tossing the morning paper to house after house, as slowly, softly another day dawns.
Dav Pilkey's pictures & story capture the shadows & colors of when night turns toward day & while everyone is tumbling out of their beds, the paperboy & his dog are tumbling back into theirs.
A fine way to introduce children to the idea of working for a living, of being responsible, of doing the work until it's done & the fun.

Hey! Wake Up! [Board book] Review

I love these books.My daughter loves these books.Boynton's books are cutsie-poosie for the kiddies, and they are hard to read without starting to sing.
There was one part that made me uncomfortable, though.I know this is going to sound hyper-sensitive, but it bummed me out when the narrator tells the little rabbit that he's too small for basketball.The book goes on to tell the elephant: "You're too big to use the swings, you should go do big guy things."The elephant looks despondent on the swing, like an eight-year-old with a glandular problem being teased by adults who think he's twelve.It made me a little sad.Why can't the rabbit play basketball and why can't the elephant ride a swing with the other kids?But, I know, it's just a kids book, I'm definitely missing the point, but I can't help what it made me think.
But your kid will love it.The rhythms are jaunty and fun.Enjoy.

Buzz (Paperback) Review

My children and I truly enjoyed Buzz. The story is a very sweet look at daily happenings that children can directly relate to and the illustrations are verybeautiful--both my three year old and five year old are drawn tothem. This book is a wonderful addition to our family's daily readingrepertoire. I highly recommend it.

A children's picture book in English and Hawaiian, accompanied by a spoken word CD with the story told by Nona Beamer and slack key guitar by Keola Beamer

"Pua Polu, the Pretty Blue Flower" is a 32 page children's picture book for young readers. Pua Polu is a story about family and the cycles of life told from the point of view of a koali, a morning glory. Author and Hawaiian elder Nona Beamer blends her experience of the natural world of Hawai'i with songs and bits of information she has gathered through her life. Written in English with a Hawaiian translation, Pua Polu acts as a Hawaiian primer.

A koali vine starts growing on the title page of the book with the invitation for keiki, children, to "follow this way." The vine meanders through every page of the story, separating the English text from the Hawaiian, encouraging young readers to follow along and see where it goes.

After the story, Nona speaks directly to the readers, explaining how the story of Pua Polu came to be. The book ends with a brief description of the block prints in the story and the ancient Hawaiian block printing technique called ohe kapala.

Did My First Mother Love Me?: A Story for an Adopted Child [Hardcover] Review

This book addresses the needs of adopted children who feel the pain of having lost their birthparents. They may "miss" them--which is really an expression of loss.
Written by an actual birthmother who gave up her child, the book tells adopted children that their birthparents loved them but could not care for them. The book speaks of the sacrifice and love involved in placing a child in another home, in terms that even small children "get."
For parents, the book also includes an article by Jeanne Warren Lindsay, "Talking with your Child about Adoption." It explains key points that parents should make when talking with their adopted children--they were born like everyone else, being adopted is normal and natural and it's forever. I'll See You in the Morning [Board book] Review

I have a slightly different version of this book - it has a picture of a little boy hugging the moon instead of the boy and his mother on the cover. It is a sweet bedtime ritual, with just the right amount of text on each page in a flowing rhyme style that children will soon learn off by heart. I would recommend this book for children 2 - 6 years of age, especially children with fears of the dark or monsters or of just being alone at bedtime. I was very impressed with the cover of this book, there is no dust jacket to get torn and neither is it made of cardboard that would soon get creased with use. The poem ends with the promise of "...and I'll see you in the morning".

Sunshine [Paperback] Review

This is a first-rate book. Won the Children's book Council Children's Picture Book of the Year Award in 1982.
Ormerod's textless illustrations of a family's early morning activities is superb. The little girl,creepsinto mum and dad's bed in the morning (the alarm closck tells us it is7.20, kisses dad, and then helps him prepare breakfast (the toast burns ashe reads the paper). They take breakfast into mum, still in bed. mum goesback to sleep, and dad gets lost in the paper. Our heroine gets herselfdressed and toileted. It's now 8.25, and a rush ensues as Mum and dad leapout of bed to get going.
Absolutely delightful. Lots of fodder forchildren's imagination, and sequencing skills - some of the pics are instrip cartoon format.
There is a sequel, moonlight, about activities atthe other end of the day, which is just as delightful.
A timelessclassic; thoroughly recommended. It was a firm bedtime favourite in ourhouse from about age 2 1/2 on.

Morgan Morning (Serendipity) (Paperback) Review

I had this book when I was young, and as is with all things it vanished, when I was finally able to get my hands on it again, I cried when I read it.
The moral "Sometimes we must lose in order to gain." I remember when I was younger and read it, I cried, I felt so much sympathy for the poor baby horse and his mother. He misbehaved, and learned, and suffered, and in that suffering and learning was rewarded, but not with the thing he most he wanted, his mother back.
The artwork makes the story, and it is beautiful, this is my favorite childrens book, for anyone who has a daughter or son who needs to be reminded that not only is it bad to disobey mom, it is good to dream, this is the book.
I recomend it twice a day and three times on sunday, get it, read it, love it.

A Long Way from Welcome (Morning Gate Bks) [Paperback] Review

Easy to read crime-solver story, and stays interesting throughout. Except for kids sneaking out in the middle of the night, the main characters are good kids. The story deals with loneliness, but there isn't anything dark in this novel, like so many others aimed at the pre-teen audience. No drugs, suicide, gangs, foul language, etc. Though it won't be a literary classic, it's good enough for pleasure reading outside of school.

When My son was younger these were among his most favorite books.He made sure we saved these so he could pass them on to his little brother to read to him once he is old enough.These are simple chapter books.They range in page count from about 68 to 96 pages I believe so they are relatively quick reads that can be read in a few nights depending upon your child's reading level.This set contains the first four books in the series:

The First, Dinosaurs Before Dawn tells the story of how jack and Annie (the series stars) first find the Magic Tree House and learn how the books can transport them to magical lands and worlds.The first takes them to the Cretaceous period. Through clues and reading the book in hand they learn and discover things about dinosaurs.

In the "Knight at Dawn", jack and Annie are transported back to medieval times.They find a castle and go exploring and find themselves on the run from the castle guards and worry they will never get back to the magic tree house.

"mummies In the Morning" Jack has always been fascinated by and pick up a book that has them traveling back to ancient Egypt.Jack and Annie enter a pyramid and get lost inside.Inside they find the ghost of an Egyptian queen whose been trapped inside the pyramid for ages and Jack and Annie try to set her free.

"Pirates Past Noon"Jack and Annie picture a wonderful beach and are transported to the times of Pirates where they are capture by Captain Bones who is seeking the treasure of Captain Kidd.

These books are geared for kids from the 2nd to the 5th grade I would say.They are entertaining, imaginative reads that help teach kids about history while being fun to read as well.Some have commented that the writing, technically speaking is weak.That may be in some spots but I feel this is mostly intentional as they are writing for 6 - 10 year olds.

These books are really a joy to read and I loved reading them along with my son.I'm glad we saved them!

Suitable for 4-8 yrs. More authors, or college Enlish Composition courses should pay attention to this author. Angela Johsnon has a way of expressingmountains of information using few words. She has a rare gift for helpingthe reader to really identify, on a personal level, with the story.
Thestory is about a moving day for a family. That's it. But, the author tellsthe story in such a compelling way, that it will surely evoke a dialogueabout this, or similar experiences between parents and children.

This is simply a wonderful book!I truly enjoyed using it while tutoring a fourth grade remedial reader because it was simple, yet beautifully worded and superbly illustrated. Each illustration is a marvelous natureportrait in itself.My fourth grade student (who happens to be veryinterested in science) savored each lovely portrait, as we talked about theanimals and environments depicted in each one. Good Morning, Chick [Paperback] Review

How many times I read this book to my children! The very youngest child can understand the story line and appreciate the repetetive text (which you can edit easily for your own sanity, if necessary).We are introduced to the little chick, his mother, and his home. Danger enters the chick's world in the form of a black, hissing cat, but Mom shields the chick with her big brown wing, and clucks the cat out of the picture. The chick meets a big frog and even falls into the pond and gets wet -- which little children think is terrifically funny.The bright, colorful pictures appeal to the very young and are easy on the adult eye.It doesn't sound like much, but it ends up being a very rich, warm experience to share this book with a little one.My 13 year old saw it today, and went through it with a bg grin on his face; which is why I checked to see if it was still in print. Thankfully, you can enjoy it with children you love, too.

Morning Girl (Mass Market Paperback) Review

"Morning Girl," by Michael Dorris, is a short novel that is told in the first person by two of its characters, Morning Girl and her brother Star Boy. The chapters alternate between these characters' two voices. The children live with their parents in an island village; their community has a pre-industrial culture.
Morning Girl and her brother have the type of conflict you might expect between a sister and her sometimes annoying younger brother. This relationship is explored against the backdrop of the children's culture and the island setting. I particularly liked the character of Star Boy: he's experiencing some emotional growing pains as he yearns for respect while still engaging in some childish actions. An important theme in the book is the naming tradition of the children's culture.
Dorris writes in a clear, poetic prose style that is touched by a mystical element. And don't miss the startling epilogue which pulls the whole story into focus.
