Shorter Christian Prayer: The Four-Week Psalter of the Liturgy of the Hours Containing Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer With Selections for the Entire Year (Leather Bound) Review

Shorter Christian Prayer: The Four-Week Psalter of the Liturgy of the Hours Containing Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer With Selections for the Entire YearLike an earlier reviewer, I also own the four-volume set of the Liturgy of the Hours.I do enjoy the additional readings and the somewhat nerdy activity of finding my way around the complete liturgy. But for pure prayer value, "Shorter Christian Prayer" is the book.It has the entire four-week psalter for the key prayers of the day, Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, as well as the same Night Prayers as the larger volumes. What it is missing are the special readings and intercessions for feasts and memorials--but even those special days are built around the same psalms printed here. For me, on my commute, Shorter Christian Prayer is less distracting and much nicer in the hand than the standard Christian Prayer or Liturgy of the Hours. It has larger print than either. It has the gospel canticles printed on the inside covers, a brilliant idea.Plus it is a LOT cheaper.

Celtic Devotions: A Guide to Morning and Evening Prayer [Hardcover] Review

Celtic Devotions: A Guide to Morning and Evening Prayer [Hardcover]I have settled into this routine: each morning, a cup of tea and a "day" from Miller's "Celtic Devotions." This ritual fills me, opens possibility, sometimes admonishes, always inspires.

A "day" from Miller's pages is arranged like this... an opening prayer or meditation, then Morning Reading, Morning Prayer, Evening Reading and Evening Prayer. I take the whole day at once, knowing myself; I rarely come back to things like this when night descends.

Miller's poetic reflections move me. Bits of Psalm 119, which provide the Morning Reading reorient me. The rhythms of Celtic life and thought and verse, oft quoted from the "Carmina Gadelica" (a collection of Gaelic songs) take me to another time then bring me home... longing, musing, praying, dreaming, hoping, resting.

So I take my tea, and I read.

Product Description:
Sunrise and sunset. Morning and evening. Waking and resting.
Your days are busy and unknown: each contains unexpected moments of joy and pain, struggle and hope. The time between your rising and sleeping is new each day.
The same was true for the Celts, though their lives looked different from yours. And in the midst of the uncertainty of days, they chose to meditate on truth, to draw near to the One who holds the sun and moon in his hands.
Calvin Miller invites you to do the same in Celtic Devotions. This thirty-day guide provides morning and evening readings and prayers to help you establish a Word-centered rhythm in your days. Centered on Psalm 119, an important psalm in Celtic praise, and including quotations from classic Celtic works, this devotional will guide your thoughts from morning to evening, helping you rest in God's truth when you're awake and when you're sleeping.

My People's Prayer Book, Vol. 3: Traditional Prayers, Modern Commentaries--P'sukei D'zimrah (Morning Psalms) (Hardcover) Review

My People's Prayer Book, Vol. 3: Traditional Prayers, Modern Commentaries--P'sukei D'zimrahRabbi Hoffman's book, My People's Prayer Book, Vol. 3, is an exquisit addition to any Jewish library. This book, which concentrates on Psukei DiZimra, morning prayers, teaches both the experienced and neophyte person, what these particular prayers mean, their significance in the morning service and why they need to be said. All three of Hoffman's books on prayer have proved a great assett in the classroom and in my personal spiritual aspiration to learn more.

Product Description:
My People's Prayer Book is a momentous seven-volume series that opens up the traditional Jewish prayer book (the Siddur) as a spiritual resource. Commentaries by 10 of today's most respected teachers, from all perspectives of the Jewish world, help worshippers and spiritual seekers understand the spiritual messages that make up the Siddur, while involving us in a personal dialogue with God, Jewish history and tradition through prayer.
Sometimes awe-striking, sometimes surprising, but always deeply spiritual, My People's Prayer Book is a gateway to understanding the riches the heritage of prayer has to offer us in our worship, and in our lives.
This third volume of the series explores the rich content and meaning of the P'sukei D'zimrah, the morning psalms that serve as the introduction to the larger prayer service. The P'sukei D'zimrah sets the tone and prepares the way for the daily transition from secular routine to the sacred act of communal prayer. Volume 3 helps us to appreciate this "prayer before the prayer" as a profoundly moving spiritual experience in its own right.
Vol. 3-P'sukei D'zimrah (Morning Psalms) features the authentic Hebrew text with a new translation designed to let people know exactly what the prayers say. Introductions tell the reader what to look for in the prayer service, as well as how to truly use the commentaries, to search for--and find--meaning in the prayer book. Commentaries from some of today's most eminent scholars and teachers from all movements of Judaism examine P'sukei D'zimrah from the perspectives of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as feminist, halakhic, medieval, linguistic, biblical, Chasidic, mystical, and historical perspectives.
Even those not yet familiar with the prayer book can appreciate the spiritual richness of the Amidah. My People's Prayer Book enables all worshippers, of any denomination, to encounter their own connection to 3,000 years of Jewish experience with the world and with God.

We Side With the Morning: Daily Prayers to the God of Hope (Paperback) Review

We Side With the Morning: Daily Prayers to the God of HopeThousands of prayer books flow from publishers, but it's hard to find a fresh voice that just might startle us into a moment of awe. True awe--a rare and rejuvenating spiritual experience. Seeking this kind of surprising daily prayer book for 2010, I was pleased to find that "We Side with the Morning" was written by a poet now in his 80s.

William Cleary is a former Jesuit who left the priesthood years ago to marry and raise a family. Both of his grown sons are musicians. His wife is a Unitarian minister. In a family like this, beautiful prayers seem to blossom on a daily basis.

As I am growing older myself, like most Baby Boomers, I'm humbled by life's daily crises and my own human limitations--but a boundless faith pushes me out of bed each morning to rejoin the global community. That's why I love prayers like one that Cleary calls "May It Be So: Giving thanks despite imperfection." The prayer includes these words: "You have made us as you made us: imperfect, crudely shaped, dull of mind--but full of promise, every single one of us. Give us insight and gratitude for things as they are."

To that, we all can say: Amen!

In this timely book of candid, powerful, and thought-provoking prayers, William Cleary gives courage and hope to those who find it difficult to connect with the divine in the midst of uncertainty. Cleary's newest work is an engaging expression of faith in a God who often seems entirely "other"―and it recognizes that true faith is not bought cheaply. We Side with the Morning provides 365 prayers on subjects ranging from doubt, social injustice, and the inevitability of death―to joy, peace, and the mystery of a loving, personal God who hears the prayers of each person.

Shabbat Morning: Shacharit and Musaf, Morning and Additional Services: My People's Prayer Book--Traditional Prayers, Modern Commentaries (My People's Prayer Book) [Hardcover] Review

Shabbat Morning: Shacharit and Musaf, Morning and Additional Services: My People's Prayer Book--Traditional Prayers, Modern Commentaries [Hardcover]Having studied the previous nine volumes in the Hoffman series on prayer, I find this much awaited volume to be a great help.As has been the case in the earlier volumes Hoffman provides a wide range of perspectives from which we may extract greater meaning from the prayer service.Shabbat morning is for many of a difficult service to relate to.With only once weekly frequency and the various distractions of Shabbat it can be difficult to relate to the meaning of the prayers.Hoffman provides a wonderful introduction, although parts are often borrowed from previous volumes, and then a talmudic approach to the individual verses of prayer.I always found something new and something that enhanced my understanding of the prayer and this by a person that has been davening for years and also studying t'fillah with the help of many teachers and texts.

Commanding Your Morning (Hardcover) Review

Commanding Your MorningCommanding Your Morning does not purport to present a never-revealed mystery from the Bible.Within the pages of this compact treatise Dr. Trimm brings the readers attention to two biblically based realities -- the power of thought and the spoken word.

For those who have not been able to grasp the fullness of the scriptures, or are looking for a deeper insight, this work will be of great value.

The author is to be commended for compiling a discourse with the intent of helping to break detrimental habits that blocks paths to fulfilling purpose.
