Product Description:
Discover practical guidance on how to contact your own inner truth from the seminal ideas of five great spiritual paths.
The Practice of Presence: Five Paths for Daily Life, is about making a new start by coming alive to this present moment, wherever we are, without changing our conditions. It is in the present that we will find meaning and heal the wounds caused by hate, violence and the suffering that is an inevitable part of life. By practicing attention to our own presence we can learn to receive in a new way everything that comes toward us -- the demands, the seductions, the possibilities for joy and nurture.
In The Practice of Presence the reader will find practical guidance on how to seek daily what we truly desire behind all the urgencies and obligations of our lives: contact with our own immediate inner truth. The book contains the seminal ideas and experiential activities of five great spiritual paths as seen through the lens of a seeker s experience. T ai Chi, prayer and meditation are well known. The Alexander Technique and Jungian studies are not usually thought of as spiritual, and the Gurdjieff teaching is relatively unknown.
Each of these paths to wholeness is complementary to the others, calling on the body, mind and feeling in unique ways that can lead to a growing integration of all three. The author, Patty de Llosa, has studied all of these paths intensively for many years, while pursuing fulltime activities as a journalist, parent and teacher. Her website is practiceofpresence.com.
Said Spirituality and Practice magazine, "Llosa is especially qualified to write about work for presence in the midst of an active life. She has been engaged in the Gurdjieff teaching all her life, having met the enigmatic philosopher as a child in the 30 s and 40 s, and has taught Gurdjieff s sacred dances and led groups for more than forty years in Peru, Chile, Canada and New York. She is now one of the senior leaders of the New York Gurdjieff Foundation. Prayer and meditation have been integral to her exploration of the world s religions from an early age, and she has studied and taught Tai Chi several evenings a week since l963, first in Lima, Peru (including a special class for Karate blackbelts), then in New York since l979. She has studied Jungian psychology some thirty years and undergone a Jungian analysis. More recently she worked intensively with Jungian analyst Marion Woodman in her Body/Soul Rhythms programs."

Morning and Evening Burgundy [Leather Bound] Review

Morning and Evening Burgundy [Leather Bound]Spurgeon's material in "Morning and Evening" is excellent. This is not a review of his work.It is however a review of this particular edition.

Whitaker House has offered up an abridged version of the content and has done a very poor job of proofing it.I have found the book difficult to read, not because I have problems with British sentence structure of over a century ago, but because I often have to re-read a sentence to parse what it was supposed to say due to mistakes in typesetting or typographical errors.

Here is a sample from the February 24th morning reading, "He usually give it in such a measure that there is not room to receive it," or "'As thy day, so shall they strength be.'"(That should be "gives" and "thy strength".)This reads like your average 13-year-old's Internet post, not like the writing of a well-educated man of God that was published by someone that cared about what was being said.

My advice?Look for a better copy.

Product Description:
A wealth of Biblical teaching from Spurgeon. He meditates on two portions of scripture each day with applications that are very relevant for contemporary Christians. Spurgeon's characteristically pithy comments hit home with a wit and elegance rarely found in other writing. Spurgeon was, primarily, a pastor and this shows with the concern he shows here for the hearts of the reader. Christians, young and old, will find his comments challenging, stimulating and direct. This edition is in a high quality diary style finish, with a gilt page edging, a presentation page and a bookmark.
This is the most complete and unabridged version available of the best-selling Morning and Evening devotions. The luxury finish makes an excellent gift for a business associate, graduate or relative.

Late pastor Stephen Olford, often called "the preacher's preacher" and a great influence upon Billy Graham, was just twenty-two years old in 1940 when he began a unique devotional study of the New Testament. Living in Wales amidst the intense turmoil of World War II, Olford commenced reading and writing every day and night about each chapter from Matthew 1 through Revelation 22.Nearly seventy years later and four years after his passing, Olford's quiet time notes are gathered in According to Your Word, a remarkably focused collection of 260 devotions that are uncommonly passionate, historical, and sure to inspire all who will read them now.

Joyce Meyer's Hearing from God Each Morning--365 Daily Devotions can help you strengthen your relationship with God through her daily meditations. This guide serves as a reminder to what is really important and to be able to recognize God's voice through all the noise of the world.

The readings are short and begin with a biblical quote followed by a short essay by Joyce. It ends with God's Word for You Today.I found these daily readings to be insightful and powerful. They applied to everyday life and reminded me where my focus needed to be at.Joyce writes in a down-to-earth clear cut manner, and really drives her point home. The readings are inspirational and positive. They really encourage you to grasp God's message and do His works.

I have many daily devotionals and usually find I read a few pages and the book gets pushed by the wayside. This one, however, will not.I was eager to read the next pages and will continue to reread this book. This devotional made me think more about my relationship with God and listen more closely to his Word.

This is a great book for yourself and would also make a wonderful gift.

Morning and Evening: Daily Readings [Paperback] Review

Morning and Evening: Daily Readings [Paperback]Charles Spurgeon is one of those brilliant Christian writers who I've just discovered as a new convert, but others have treasured for years. After my pastor quoted him for the third time in a homily, I decided I needed to learn more. And then I received this wonderful devotional for Christmas--perfect timing!
This is an version of Spurgeon's classic daily devotional, which has been updated using the New Internation Version of the Bible as a source for the scripture verses. Spurgeon's writing has also been revised somewhat to tranlate some of the archaic expressions into phrasing that will make sense to modern readers.
The text still retains a turn-of-the-century feel, but the words are no longer a barrier to understanding.
There are meditations for each morning and evening. They are full of wisdom and comfort, and I am amazed at how much richness Spurgeon is able to draw from even the shortest bits of text, "mighty to save", "He humbled Himself", etc. This gives readers a renewed appreciation for the value of each and every word in Scripture.
Helpful indexes make the book useful as a reference when readers need help or inspiration on a particular topic. This is a book that will be used long after the original devotions have been enjoyed on a daily basis.

Morning and Evening: A New Edition of the Classic Devotional Based on The Holy Bible, English Standard Version [Hardcover] Review

Morning and Evening: A New Edition of the Classic Devotional Based on The Holy Bible, English Standard Version [Hardcover]Alistair Begg, pastor (Parkside Church in Cleveland, Ohio), author, and speaker, has done a magnificent job in updating this devotional classic. Begg's updates enable a wider audience to enjoy and be nourished by Spurgeon's timeless writing. Although this devotional (in its unrevised version) can be accessed daily on multiple websites, I have found myself to be more consistent in my reading when I hold a hard copy in my hands.
Spurgeon's pastoral warmth and thirst for evangelism come through strongly in these short devotionals. His focus on all three members of the Trinity is excellent as he beckons us further in serving Christ. I have also found his connection with the individual reader to be outstanding as he instructs and motivates toward change and action.
Granted, some of Spurgeon's interpretation may be dated (for instance, he interprets Song of Solomon as an allegory between Christ and the Church). However, this clearly is the minority, and the timeless nature of his topics far outweigh any problem this poses.
I have used this devotional off and on for many months now, and have many friends who have also been encouraged by their reading of it.
This 2003 edition is based on the English Standard Version (ESV), a recent translation respected for its readability and faithfulness to the text. Among the many Christian leaders who endorse the ESV are J.I. Packer (Regent College), Chuck Colson (Prison Fellowship Ministries), John Piper (Bethlehem Baptist Church), and R.C. Sproul (Ligonier Ministries).
