The Evening and the Morning (Paperback) Review

The Evening and the MorningTom Baldwin's second novel takes us to a windy hillside,
and an archaeological dig, in this story of two women. With
multi-faceted characters and in-depth description of the
worlds they inhabit, we get to know each of them and their
many gifts.

With a tale that meanders back and forth between the
present day and the Pleistocene Era, we learn of
their fight for survival. One literally for her own
life and that of her tribe, the other for her profession
and her race. These lives, destined to become entwined,
take us from boardroom to bedroom, dank cave to sunny hillside.

Along the way we learn a lot about survival in an ancient
land, much harsher then the one we live in today. We come
to understand that being good at something doesn't always
mean that you won't be questioned every step of the way.
Together these women from two very different times garner
strength separately and then from one another with a final
gift that for once and all will make the world take notice.

Product Description:
The lives of two young women are mystically intertwined by a powerful talisman, a piece of meteorite, with the power to guide one of them in the peopling of a continent and the other in bridging the chasm of time that separates them. 185,000 years ago Evening Star leads a group of cave people across the icy tundra of Central Asia towards a new home shown to her in a vision. It lies beside a lake in a warm and fruitful country teeming with game, but the way will not be easy. Along her trek she must battle hostile lands, animals, and people. Ganny, a Native American archaeologist, is convinced she has found evidence that her people came to the Americas thousands and thousands of years before the archaeological establishment is willing to believe. They decry the stone tools she is finding beside a California lake bed. To win acceptance she must battle prejudice, willful ignorance, and dishonesty.

Morning Star: surrealism, marxism, anarchism, situationism, utopia [Paperback] Review

Morning Star: surrealism, marxism, anarchism, situationism, utopia [Paperback]When members of the surviving old guard of surrealism declared the movement over (Le Monde, October 1969), there were many dissenters.International adherents to the idea that surrealism is a state of mind rather than a historical movement affirmed their continued loyalty to its revolutionary principles.Löwy locates these at the intersection of Marxism and anarchism, a mix that aims to pose a counterweight to capitalist rationalism and disenchantment (Max Weber) by re-enchanting the world.Myth, poetry, art created in a spirit of revolt by the unleashing of the forces of dream and the unconscious--these have been liberatory gestures and practices that are common to the subjects of Löwy's engaging essays, from Benjamin to Debord, from Pierre Naville to Vincent Bouonore and Claude Cahun.
The recent collapse of many capitalist institutions has exposed the false rationality on which those institutions were based and we are left with a world that is not only disenchanted but chaotic, a world in which many of the predictions of the Communist Manifesto have been borne out in devastating ways.Löwy's fascinating book invites us to the positive labor of "re-enchantment," providing models for active engagement and stimulus for further reading.
An appealing feature of this volume is the presence of art work by many of Löwy's international surrealist friends, as well as some of his own works. The art work also comprises many contributions by women surrealists--the Prague surrealist Eva Svankmajerova and the Canadian Marie S.(alias "Ingatta") whose "illuminated envelopes" are beguiling contributions to mail art.By themselves, these point to a salient aspect of present-day surrealism--the presence of impressive women artists and writers.A whole chapter is dedicated to the surrealist artist Ody Saban, a welcome addition from the French edition.

Product Description:

An expanded edition of revered theorist Michael Löwy's Morning Star: Marxism and Surrealism (previously published in French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and Greek), this masterwork collects the author's essays on the ways in which surrealism intersected with a variety of revolutionary political approaches, ranging from utopian ideals to Marxism and situationism. Taking its title from André Breton's essay"Arcane 17," which casts the star as the searing firebrand of rebellion, Löwy's provocative work spans many perspectives. These include surrealist artists who were deeply interested in Marxism and anarchism (Breton among them), as well as Marxists who were deeply interested in surrealism (Walter Benjamin in particular).Probing the dialectics of innovation, diversity, continuity, and unity throughout surrealism's international presence, Morning Star also incorporates analyses of Claude Cahun, Guy Debord, Pierre Naville, José Carlos Mariátegui and others, accompanied by numerous reproductions of surrealist art. An extraordinarily rich collection, Morning Star promises to ignite new dialogues regarding the very nature of dissent.

Orrin Porter Rockwell: Man of God Son of Thunder [Paperback] Review

Orrin Porter Rockwell: Man of God Son of Thunder [Paperback]Harold Schindler's biography on Mormon bad-boy Orrin Porter Rockwell is still the best biography of Rockwell out there. Moreover, it may be one of the best biographies of any early Mormon written. This book is not even so much about the quiet, enigmatic Rockwell as it is the genesis of an American religious movement.
Rockwell is a hard historical figure. He is a legendary figure whom the LDS church has tended to whitewash. Non-Mormon historians have had a tendency to villify him, making him a murderer and a theif. Somewhere, undoubtedly in the middle, lies the truth. Instead of writing an indictment or an apology for his life, Schindler writes a well-balanced account of Rockwell's life. He doesn't necessarily try to provide answers or justifications, only gives the facts and lets the reader decide. No doubt Schindler's objectivity and meticulous research has made this volume stand the test of time to become a classic in Mormon history.
I don't think I have ever said this about a book before: Probably just as engaging and interesting as the book itself are the footnotes which sometimes take up more of the page than the text. This is an awesome bibliographic reference as well. Not only does Schindler tell you about the life and times of Rockwell, he also tells many fascinating historical asides. If you don't believe or are suspcious about his research, then one may look at the documents he was viewing. Schindler does an excellent job of backing up most everything that he says.

FROM THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF JOHN ADAMS
Winner of the 1982 National Book Award for Biography, Mornings on Horseback is the brilliant biography of the young Theodore Roosevelt. Hailed as a masterpiece by Newsday, it is the story of a remarkable little boy -- seriously handicapped by recurrent and nearly fatal attacks of asthma -- and his struggle to manhood.
His father -- the first Theodore Roosevelt, "Greatheart," -- is a figure of unbounded energy, enormously attractive and selfless, a god in the eyes of his small, frail namesake. His mother -- Mittie Bulloch Roosevelt -- is a Southerner and celebrated beauty.
Mornings on Horseback spans seventeen years -- from 1869 when little "Teedie" is ten, to 1886 when he returns from the West a "real life cowboy" to pick up the pieces of a shattered life and begin anew, a grown man, whole in body and spirit.
This is a tale about family love and family loyalty...about courtship, childbirth and death, fathers and sons...about gutter politics and the tumultuous Republican Convention of 1884...about grizzly bears, grief and courage, and "blessed" mornings on horseback at Oyster Bay or beneath the limitless skies of the Badlands.

Wings of the Morning (Kensington Chronicles, Book 2) (Paperback) Review

Wings of the MorningLori Wick certainly is one of my favorite Christian/Romance writers, coming up to a close second to Dee Henderson. And probably my favorite books from Lori Wick are the Kensington Chronicles.
"Wings of the Morning" is about young Victoria "Smokey" Simmons, captain of one of the fastest ship of the Atlantic, the 'Aramis'. When her father, the famous Clancy, had died and left her alone in the world, she asks God to give her strength. Three years have passed and Smokey begins dreaming of life away from the sea. She wants to have a home and raise a family. When she meets another sea captain, Dallas Knight, she believes that her dreams can finally come true. Dallas, also hopelessly in love with her, shares her dreams. But when a scheming and evil pirate comes into their lives, Smokey and Dallas' hopes for the future may come to an end. Will they have the strength to overcome these painful events and to trust themselves into their Father in heaven?
A truly marvelous tale taking place in the mid-1800s, "Wings of the Morning" will have you swept into a world of romance and suspense. I love the wonderful characters of Smokey, who is young and shy yet has great spirit, and Dallas, who will do anything to protect her. They are so real that it is very hard not to like them and to hope they have their dreams fulfilled.
The other three books of the Kensington Chronicles are "The Hawk and the Jewel", "Who Brings Forth the Wind", and "The Knight and the Dove", all of them filled with romance and suspense, plus they all are about people who love and honor their God. My suggestion to you is that if you have never read any of Lori Wick's books, you should start with these four books.
And if you are looking for other terrific Christian/Romance books, I recommend all books by Dee Henderson, including the O'Malley Series, "Danger in the Shadows", and the Uncommon Heroes Series. But be ready for suspense, intrigue, and mystery, because these books are filled with them!

Morning Of The Rising Sun: The Heroic Story of the Battles For Guadalcanal (Paperback) Review

Morning Of The Rising Sun: The Heroic Story of the Battles For GuadalcanalHaving had a strong interest in the Guadalcanal Campaign since I read "Guadalcanal Diary" when I was in high school I couldn't resist buying Dr.Friedman's book as soon as it came out.I enjoyed the book and found it to be informative especially with the charts and maps that he supplied. He has laid it out in a fashion that shows how the naval and air battles tied in with the ground campaign. It looks like his main interest is in the naval battles as they showed the most detail. If he has a weakness it was in the air battles and being a 'junior birdman' myself(PPL) and having a close relative that flew SBD's from Guadalcanal I probably am more sensitive to this than most readers.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Solomons Campaign.I only gave it a four star review due to some editing and binding problems.

Product Description:
When it comes to the Pacific theater of the Second World War, Morning of the Rising Sun: The Heroic Story of the Struggle for Guadalcanal by author and historian Kenneth I. Friedman, Ph.D. is the quintessential guide to the epic and stirring tale of the six-month conflict between the United States and the Japanese Empire over the vital island of Guadalcanal. Located in the Southern Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal was in the direct path of the primary supply line between the continental United States and Australia-New Zealand; whoever possessed the island would control the direction of the war in the Pacific. Meticulously researched, the author uses a bipartisan approach to convey the great dedication and bravery of both the Allied and Japanese fighting men. His attention to detail provides an embracing journey through a series of the most ferocious land, air, and sea battles in the history of war.

Waiting for the Morning Train: An American Boyhood (Great Lakes Books) (Paperback) Review

Waiting for the Morning Train: An American BoyhoodI never met Bruce Catton, but I corresponded briefly with him in the mid-1970's.The same qualities that marked him as a correspondent--courtesy, graciousness, and gentle humor--illuminate this lovely memoir of a great historian.
Catton grew up in Benzonia, Michigan, "a city upon a hill," as he correctly notes, very close to Lake Michigan, where the old certitudes held seemingly invincible sway over virtually every aspect of one's daily life.Catton's father was the superintendent of Benzonia Academy, whose main building is now Benzonia's library.
The memoir, which recalls the years between the author's birth and his graduation from high school, is a series of reflections on what it was like to be a boy just as Michigan's logging era was drawing to a close, when sleepy Benzonia, along with the rest of the nation, was about to drift into the maw of the violent twentieth century.Catton writes of boyhood ambitions and boyish pranks, of the rich history that made Michigan's Lower Peninsula what it was, and especially of the Civil War veterans whose stories would later prompt Catton to devote years of his life to recording the history of that great conflict in rich anecdotal detail.
Though unabashedly nostalgic, "Waiting for the Morning Train" is neither saccharine nor bitter.Catton was far too experienced a writer and historian to let his emotions get the better of him. This is, nonetheless, a rich and moving memoir of a time which, though it may seem virtually within reach, we will never see again.
I recommend this book highly as a gift for yourself and, perhaps, for that reflective friend who can appreciate personal history told with universal appeal.Bruce Catton was, quite simply, one of the greatest writers and historians this country has produced, and in many ways this deceptively modest little volume represents the zenith of his literary achievement.

Bright Shiny Morning (P.S.) [Paperback] Review

Bright Shiny Morning [Paperback]I was the first to get the book from my local Barnes and Nobles and I know this because they told me this--I read a lot.I read Austen and Bronte.I read Hemingway and Faulkner.I read Mailer and Vidal.I read I read I read. You'll have to trust me when I say that I consider myself a literate person, a published writer, and a harsh and unbearable critic--of self and others--and I haven't read all of Bright Shiny Morning yet.I have read four hundred and ten pages of it.With the negative reviews that are to follow, I figured a partial review on my favorite place to buy books online would be appropriate to thin out what will surely be many an unjust review.Let's put aside that he's an embellisher in his memoirs (I could care less).Let's focus solely on the novel at hand.Let's start with the negatives.

Two Teens runaway from home to start a life together.(Cliche)
A blockbuster actor married to a beautiful woman is really gay.(Cliche)
A spanish nanny with a deformity who starts a relationships with the son of a client.(Cliche)
A homeless man who befriends a runaway.(Most assuredly cliche)
The writing is shoddily punctuated, annoyingly incomplete, and choppy.(You look and have to make sure you read it right).
The language is rough. (Constant swearing, difficult to read material)
The vignette excursions are sometimes annoying, sometimes interesting, sometimes boring, sometimes a miss, and sometimes a hit.(Some worked in the book, other's probably could've been left out).

Now I'll tell you why none of these negatives matter.

The cliche story lines could kill a book if not so beautifully put together that you become engrossed in the characters--the characters become the originals in a story that's been told a thousand times.
The writing is all his own. It's reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's The Road.It flares with an immediacy not seen in books anymore--or rarely seen in books anymore. The excursions from the story are necessary because without them, you don't get the major character, which is, LA.LA rings as the focal character, a land and place all its own that rings true to the world around us, the focal point for the American dream, the focal point for hope and decadance, the focal point for stardom and fame, the focal point for what drives American's home lives to the television each day, the focal point for these characters existence, the focal point for life in a sense.

I ask, and I hope, my only hope, that you who are angry at James Frey, let it go, and don't try and crush the book simply because you feel lied to.A believable lie, after all, is what good fiction is made out of, for if he could suspend disbelief well enough for us to believe everything in his memoir's (that he didn't even want to call memoirs, mind you, it's labeled, Memoir/Literature), he certainly suspends disbelief in bringing to life the characters. You will feel their pain and their defeats, their victories and their happines, at least to where I've read to.I don't know about the rest of the book... but he's never been one for the crapped out ending, so I'm quite sure. Buy it, you'll love it.If you don't buy it and you don't read it, then just don't write a review, for a review is not how you feel about the author, it's how you feel about the work he put out into the world, so be mature, grow up, and read a good book from a unique and new voice in the world of literature.
